The Canisius volleyball team hosts the University at Buffalo this evening at 6 p.m. in a Big 4 match. The Griffs enter this evening’s contest with a 10-13 record, while UB is 14-9. No admission charge.

Amberg Quartet Concert

The Amberg Quartet, a flute, oboe, clarinet and piano ensemble, will perform tonight at 7:30 p.m in the Montante Cultural Center.

The Amberg Quartet includes Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra musicians Betsy Reeds, flute and John Fullam, clarinet; oboist Paul Schlossmann and Canisius College Composer-in-Residence Persis Parshall Vehar, piano. The program features works by Amberg, Schumann and Vehar. This performance is part one of a two part series for the Eighth Annual Student Composers’ Workshop and is free and open to the public.

Linda Thomas Lecture October 29

Canisius welcomes Linda E. Thomas, PhD, professor of theology and anthropology at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, to campus on Thursday, October 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room. The lecture, entitled “The African American Church and Politics in 2009,” is free and open to the public.

Thomas is professor of theological anthropology at the Lutheran School of Theology in Chicago, Illinois. She has engaged students, scholars and communities for almost 20 years. Her work is grounded in a womanist perspective, and it focuses on the intersection and mutual influence of culture and religion.

Thomas’ lecture will be followed by responses from three clergy from prominent African American churches in the Buffalo area: Rev. Michael Chapman, senior pastor at St. Johns Baptist Church, Buffalo; Rev. Rodney Hennings, senior pastor at Zion Dominion Ministries in Amherst; and Rev. Richard Stenhouse, pastor of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church.
