Fire Drills Coming October 9

On Friday, October 9, 2009, Canisius will hold routine fire drills in academic buildings beginning at about 10 a.m. and concluding around 3 p.m. The buildings involved will be tested in the following order: Demerly Hall, Agassiz, Montante Cultural Center, Palisano Pavillion, Horan O’Donnell, Old Main, Bagen Hall, Churchill Tower, Bouwhuis Library, Wehle Technology, Health Science Center, Koessler Athletic Center and the Student Center.

Regulations forbid announcing the exact times. When the alarm sounds, please leave the building by the nearest exit as shown on the posted emergency exit routes. Generally a drill lasts no more than six or seven minutes. All persons must leave the building they are in when the alarm sounds. One person may remain in each office or suite to answer phones. Elevators may not be used.

Note: If you are involved in an event which can not be interrupted without serious complications, please notify Lt. Ron LaVigne in the Public Safety Office at Ext. 2332, or rlavigne@canisius.edu to discuss an exemption for your event.

Cyber Security Tip of the Day

Today’s Tip: There is nothing that keeps someone from forging the return address on an Email; in fact, it’s no more difficult than writing a false return address in the corner of an envelope before dropping it in a mailbox. Just because an address ends in “@canisius.edu” doesn’t mean that someone at Canisius actually wrote it. If something seems truly odd about a message, don’t take it at face value; instead, call the person on the phone and ask if they sent it to you.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month. In order to make faculty and staff more aware of computer security issues, helpful facts or suggestions will be published every day this month in Under The Dome. Direct questions or comments to Matt Gracie, campus information security administrator, at Ext. 8378 or via Email at graciem@canisius.edu.

These tips will also be available on the “Canisius Information Security” Facebook page. Facebook users can add that page to their newsfeed.
