Philanthropy at Canisius reached new heights in fiscal year 2017-18, as the college secured more than $10 million in donations from the college community.  The amount raised marked the college’s highest non-campaign annual total in its history.  In addition to several large gifts and bequests, Canisius exceeded its goal for the annual fund, raised a record total on Giving Day and added almost 40 new members to the college’s Leadership Society ($1,000+).

“Everywhere I go, I encounter alumni and parents who cannot say enough good things about the Canisius experience,” says President John J. Hurley.  “It’s so gratifying to see that come back to us in philanthropy.”

Canisius College was approved for a $685,351 grant through the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching (HECap) Grant Program.  The funds will support the construction of state-of-the-art allied health labs and additional facilities for the college’s graduate program in physician assistant studies. Canisius will also direct a portion of the grant toward equipment for the program, including digital anatomy tables, practice mannequins for skills development, and computer and audiovisual equipment to record and play information for case studies.

As a reminder, the adjustment of operating hours on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. will end on Friday, July 27. Departments may continue to adjust their hours of operation (based on department need) to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break from Monday, July 30 through Friday, August 17.

As we welcome the staff from the Institutional Advancement Department to the Martin House this week and in preparation for ongoing parking needs on campus, please note that the relaxed parking will end on Friday, July 27 and our campus-wide parking enforcement will resume on Monday, July 30.  Be sure to display a valid parking permit in your vehicle, and park only in lots that coincide with your permit as of July 30.  Also, remember that the Tower Lot is reserved for guests and those with special permits.

The Human Resources Department is pleased to announce that Lindsay Miller is the Canisius College Employee of Distinction for June 2018! Lindsay was nominated for the award by Tyra Henson, admissions counselor.

At Canisius for five years, Lindsay currently works as the associate director of admissions. Lindsay was selected for this award based on her ability to build morale among her team members; her critical role in coordinating marketing and communications for the Undergraduate Admissions office; and the fact that she exceeded her enrollment goals in the Fall of 2017.

This year’s annual fundraising campaign for the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County is almost upon us! For those who may not be aware, Canisius participates in this fundraising campaign each year to assist the United Way in helping those in need in our community, as well as allowing them to do the work that no one nonprofit can do alone. Thanks to you, the United Way can identify the areas of most need, tackle those issues head on, and promote volunteerism and engagement throughout the community.

Our United Way Campaign Committee is currently seeking new volunteers. Members of the committee get to participate in fun behind-the-scenes activities, such as planning the extremely successful Fall Chili Cook-Off! Even a small amount of your time on the committee will go a long way, as everything you do to help the United Way empowers the Buffalo community. Each semester you must continuously record your students’ grades in each course.  If you record grades in a D2L gradebook, it handles the calculations and provides your students with an up-to-date grade report.  If you use D2L’s grades toolset, your students know how they are doing in the class at any time throughout the semester.  Once you build a gradebook in a course, it copies along with other course content into subsequent semesters.  With upgrades coming on August 8th, D2L’s grades tool works efficiently with their rubric toolset as well.

Set for Tuesday, July 31, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. in the Economou Dining Hall, the event serves as a great opportunity to enjoy lunch with friends and colleagues from across campus. Prior to lunch, a Mass in honor of the Feast of St. Ignatius Loyola will be offered by Rev.

Fr. Lynch will offer a short mass prior to the lunch at 11:30 a.m. on July 31 in honor of St. Ignatius Loyola in Christ the King Chapel.

This year, guests will be treated to a unique menu that offers hints of Hawaiian flare and includes Huli Huli chicken, homemade pineapple coleslaw, potato salad and fresh corn-on-the-cob.  For dessert?  Everyone’s favorite – soft-serve ice cream!

On August 8, D2L at Canisius will be getting a few new screens for quiz construction and an easier-to-use “question pool” alternative to random sections.  If you use quizzes in D2L, these new features will be fairly intuitive to figure out.   You can still opt out of these new screens, at least until December, but we think you will find them quicker to use than the old screens and random section operation.

The smooth, sultry vocals of Public Safety Officer Allen (Al Wood) Callwood MSEd ᾽19 are featured on the outro (conclusion) of Drake’s new single, “After Dark.”  Callwood is the former host of the Quiet Storm with Al Wood on 93.7 WBLK. He has also worked for NPR in Binghamton/Ithaca, WKBW-TV, CBS Radio and Townsquare Media. A New York State certified teacher, Callwood is in the master’s program in educational leadership and supervision at Canisius.

The new release “dropped” on Thursday, June 28 and is available on Apple Itunes, Amazon and other streaming services and will be available on CD.

Judi Caserta ᾽80, assistant athletic director for business operations, has been named the 2018 Collegiate Athletic Business Management Association (CABMA) Manager of the Year.  Caserta is the first person from a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) school to receive the honor, and she is just the eighth female to earn the award since it was first presented in 1966.

The Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP) Mobile Market, sponsored by the Canisius Sustainability Initiative, returns on Wednesday, July 25 from 12 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. in the Health Science Lot located at East Delavan and Spillman Ave. MAP offers affordable and fresh vegetables and fruits during the growing season.  Additional dates include August 22, September 26 and October 24.

MAP partners with local organizations to bring produce into areas of Buffalo where access to healthy, affordable and fresh food is limited. The nonprofit also operates a farm stand at its urban farm – which will soon include a new farmhouse and Community Food Training Center – at 387 Massachusetts Avenue.

While you are there, swing by to see the developments at the East West Community Garden, 1032 Lafayette, near Main. Pick up some seasonal local produce from Breymiller Farm Market who will be there on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 p.m. – 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Stop the Bleed Training will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Regis Room North. This training teaches you three actions that can control a victim’s bleeding until emergency responders arrive.

Learn how to help in a bleeding emergency and save a life. All members of the campus are invited to attend.

D2L Update

A better way for rubrics

On August 8, select features in D2L will be upgraded.  This includes rubrics, which are simpler for professors to use.  If you use D2L’s interactive rubric tool, you know that currently it’s a bit cumbersome when you use the rubric to grade a dropbox assignment or discussion and have rubric information display in students᾽ grade reports (that feeds from the gradebook).  Perhaps you opted not to use rubrics in D2L for this reason.  Check out the COLI blog to learn how rubrics will be easier to use in the fall semester.

Our students appreciate rubrics, having extensive experience with them in their primary and secondary educations.  They also like D2L’s gradebook feature, too.  Now, both rubrics and the gradebook are easier for professors to use.

Peter Schaber, PhD

I am pleased to announce that Peter Schaber, PhD, professor of chemistry in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, accepted the role of interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences for the coming academic year. Dr. Schaber has long been a respected and contributing member of the faculty having served as department chair for ten years, as a member of the Faculty Senate numerous times, and as chair of the Faculty Welfare Committee.

Perhaps most importantly for our tenure-track faculty, Dr. Schaber is currently a member of the Committee on Faculty Status and, given the annual review of tenure-track faculty, is familiar with the progress and contributions of junior faculty members. Hopefully, this familiarity will allow a smooth transition into the mentoring and evaluative role of the dean.

Dr. Schaber’s start date is August 6, 2018, following the completion of the summer school course he is teaching.

My thanks to all those who nominated a candidate for the position, to the faculty who assisted with interviews, and to the staff members who met with the finalists. I am grateful to all who stepped forward and considered the position.

Canisius Enactus (formerly SIFE) placed fifth in the Enactus United States National Exposition in Kansas City, MO from May 21-23. Out of approximately 1,300 Enactus teams in the US, only 87 teams earned a spot to compete at the national level. Canisius College Enactus advanced to the semi-final round of competition – an honor bestowed to the top 16 US Enactus teams. Canisius Enactus consistently places among the top teams in the country at national competitions.

Enactus is an international non-profit organization that brings together student, academic and business leaders who are committed to using the power of entrepreneurial action to improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need. Guided by academic advisors and business experts, the student leaders of Enactus create and implement community empowerment projects around the globe.

The Canisius Enactus team gave a 17-minute audiovisual presentation highlighting their programs’ entrepreneurial, economic and social impact to a panel of judges from major corporations, such as Walmart, Hallmark, Unilever, KPMG, Rich’s, Johnson & Johnson, Ford and Microsoft, followed by a five-minute Q&A session.

The Canisius Enactus team included the following students:

Nick Tober ᾽06, MBA ᾽08 serves as Enactus advisor and has been involved with Canisius Enactus since fall 2004. Tober replaces Patricia Hutton, PhD, professor of economics and finance, who founded the team in spring 2004.

“The Canisius College and Buffalo communities are forever indebted to Pat for her hard work, perseverance and dedication to Enactus over the past 13 years,” says Tober. “Canisius Enactus is making a positive difference in the education of our students and is giving them a competitive edge in the job market. The team’s initiatives not only contribute to the local community and economy but are also consistent with and promote the Jesuit mission of the college, especially Buffalo’s growing immigrant community.”

COLI Summer Faculty Meetup Tonight

Online and Hybrid Coursework

The Center for Online Learning and Innovation (COLI) invites online and hybrid instructors to a meetup tonight, Wednesday, June 27 from 6:00 ‒ 7:30 p.m. in the Library Learning Center Classroom.

For more than a decade, Canisius College faculty have taught high quality online and hybrid courses.  In the process, our professors have pioneered methods in this relatively new medium for teaching and learning.

During the meetup, we can share our experiences in, reflections on, and ambitions for teaching online. Rather than having a formal presentation, faculty should come as colleagues to share their insights and concerns.  In your online courses, what worked for you?  What didn’t?  How do you measure your success?  What would you like to do teaching online that you’re not doing now, either because you’re still planning or building it, or because you face an obstacle of some sort?

We also invite any faculty interested in teaching online or hybrid classes, but who have not yet done so.  Please bring your questions for our seasoned veteran online faculty, and gain valuable insights from those who have built excellent online courses.

Athletics Director Bill Maher talks sports and the Holy Spirit on “Crossroads”

Canisius College Athletics Director Bill Maher will be the featured guest on the next edition of “Crossroads,” scheduled for broadcast on Sunday, July 1.

The focus of this month’s program is “Giving the Best of Yourself,” the Vatican’s new document on sport and the human person.  Maher will share his perspective on how sports can be an instrument of encounter, formation, mission and sanctification.

Stop the Bleed Training

Learn life-saving skills

Stop the Bleed Training will be held on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Regis Room North. This training teaches you three actions that can control a victim’s bleeding until emergency responders arrive.

Learn how to help in a bleeding emergency and save a life. All members of the campus are invited to attend.

Training is being offered by Student Health and the Erie County Medical Center.

The U.S. Department of Education recently awarded researchers at the Institute for Autism Research (IAR) at Canisius an $880,431 grant.  The grant will fully fund a three-year study of the long-term beneficial impacts from an innovative school intervention for high-functioning children with autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) developed by the IAR research team.

Children with HFASD comprise nearly half of all children with ASD and, despite relative strengths in cognitive and language skills, exhibit chronic and pervasive social impairments and restricted and repetitive behaviors that severely interfere with daily functioning leading to long-term negative outcomes. These long-term negative outcomes have led researchers to suggest that existing school interventions for these students are ineffective.

Researchers at the IAR have effectively treated the clinical impairments and symptoms of children with HFASD in their comprehensive summer program (summerMAX) for more than a decade. In an effort to more effectively treat these children in school settings, the research team adapted the summer program into a school-based intervention (schoolMAX), which they tested in an earlier, large-scale randomized trial funded by the U. S. Department of Education.

Results from the school study found that students with HFASD who received schoolMAX demonstrated significantly better social understanding and social skills and fewer ASD symptoms following treatment compared to students with HFASD who received their typical-educational programming.  This latest grant from the Department of Education will enable researchers to examine the long-term beneficial impacts of the treatment.

Sporting goods retail is big business these days, with sales in the U.S. averaging $60 billion annually – and growing.

To help meet the increasing need for development and management professionals in the sporting goods industry, Canisius College will introduce a new master’s of science degree in sport product development, beginning in fall 2018.  The online program is comprised of 33 credit hours (nine courses), two tracks (product design and retail management) and culminates with a six-credit internship. Upon completion of the program, graduates will have developed an understanding of theoretical foundations and their practical applications; be able to communicate that knowledge and apply it to the management and business of sport product; and recognize and implement those areas of professional obligations that include diversity and global awareness.

Lorrisa (Hint) Naugle ᾿07 and her husband, Chris, started FlipOut Academy in the Eastern Hills Mall in Clarence, NY.  Two years and 150 flips later, the couple pitched “Risky Builders,” to HGTV and landed a television pilot!

The pilot episode of “Risky Builders” is set to air Sunday, June 24 at 2 p.m. on HGTV. If the show receives enough support, it could be picked up for a full run of episodes.

Beth Ann Sardina ’07, MBA ’09 and Eric J. Hezel ’06 recently earned the prestigious designation of Fellow of the Society of Actuaries (FSA).

Actuaries are the leading professionals in managing risk.  They are at the heart of business strategy, ensuring sound investments are made and goals are fulfilled.  It generally takes 6-10 years to complete the requirements to become a Fellow, including passing a number of rigorous exams in areas such as probability, financial mathematics, financial economics, life contingencies and actuarial modeling.

This summer, the Center for Online Learning and Innovation (COLI) invites online and hybrid instructors to a meetup on Wednesday, June 27 from 6:00 ‒ 7:30 p.m. in the Library Learning Center Classroom.

For more than a decade, Canisius College faculty have taught high quality online and hybrid courses.  In the process, our professors have pioneered methods in this relatively new medium for teaching and learning.

During the meetup, we can share our experiences in, reflections on, and ambitions for teaching online. Rather than having a formal presentation, faculty should come as colleagues to share their insights and concerns.  In your online courses, what worked for you?  What didn’t?  How do you measure your success?  What would you like to do teaching online that you’re not doing now, either because you’re still planning or building it, or because you face an obstacle of some sort?

We also invite any faculty interested in teaching online or hybrid classes, but who have not yet done so.  Please bring your questions for our seasoned veteran online faculty, and gain valuable insights from those who have built excellent online courses.

Canisius Director of Public Safety Kimberly Beaty ᾿86 received a Medgar Evers Award from the Buffalo chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She accepted the award at a ceremony June 9.

Beaty was recognized for espousing the spirit of the NAACP in practice and in deeds. Medgar Evers Awards are named for the Civil Rights activist who served as the first state field secretary of the NAACP in Mississippi until his assassination in 1963.

Kimberly A. Venti has been named associate vice president for institutional advancement (AVPIA) at Canisius. She is responsible for creating, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive, multi-year plan to increase donors and dollars in support of Canisius. Venti is charged with engaging internal and external stakeholders in the planning and implementation of a compelling case for support of Canisius.

Venti works closely with President John J. Hurley and Vice President for Institutional Advancement William M. Collins, members of the Board of Trustees, and staff on development and implementation of a high-level prospect strategy. She also serves as leader of the development team, and provides day-to-day oversight for the staff by providing advice and guidance to development officers and support staff.

Venti has more than 15 years’ experience in development and fundraising for higher education and several of Buffalo’s major medical centers. Prior to Canisius, she was director of campaigns and major gifts at Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), where she created and directed a multi-million dollar capital campaign for the hospital’s new Trauma Center and Emergency Department. Venti also previously served as director of development for the University at Buffalo’s Jacob’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences where she was a key staff member in raising funds to build a new medical school downtown as part of a $200 million comprehensive campaign.

Venti holds a master’s degree in multidisciplinary studies and a bachelor’s degree in general studies from the State University College at Buffalo.

Canisius recently established an Institute for Classical and Medieval Studies (ICMS) to provide interdisciplinary learning and research opportunities for students, faculty and residents of the greater Buffalo community in an effort to enrich lives through intellectual engagement. As a collaborative effort of faculty from the Departments of Classics, English, Fine Arts, History, Philosophy and Religious Studies and Theology, ICMS embraces Canisius’ Jesuit tradition by bridging disciplines in its quest for greater understanding of the past and the present.

“So much of what is happening in the world today, good and bad, is rooted in the past,” said Kathryn Williams, PhD, chair of Classics and a co-founder and co-director of ICMS. “Greater awareness of ancient and medieval societies provides critical perspectives on current events and can help us as we strive to create a better tomorrow.”

ICMS launched in March with a public lecture on “Peter Canisius, the Humanities and Jesuit Education.” Additional events included a unique interpretation of Beowulf with a Celtic harp performance and a course on “The Great Persian War.”

Canisius College President John Hurley and SUNY Erie President Dan Hocoy, PhD, signed a student housing agreement this morning at a 10 a.m. during a news conference at the Delavan Townhouse Community Center.

Presidents Hurley and Hocoy signed the agreement which leases space for approximately 65 SUNY Erie students in Canisius’ Delavan Townhouses beginning in August for the fall academic year, and discussed the importance of the public-private partnership between the two institutions.  Canisius and SUNY Erie also recently signed a dual admissions agreement.

Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company’s corporate citizenship initiative, donated a $10,000 grant to Canisius in support of the Western New York Chemistry Olympiad. Representatives from Honeywell’s Buffalo Research Laboratory presented the check to Mariusz Kozik, PhD, chair of chemistry and biochemistry and coordinator of the Western New York Chemistry Olympiad, at a gathering of Honeywell and Canisius College administrators on June 4.

The funds will be used to offset costs associated with students’ preparation and participation in the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad. The Chemistry Olympiad is a local, national and international competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored nationally by the American Chemical Society and hosted locally by Canisius.

Eight Canisius College students recently completed a three-week international education internship where they taught English at Colegio San Ignacio (CSI) in Oviedo, Spain. This is the eighth year of nurturing a rich partnership with CSI, which is a Jesuit concertado public school, pre-K through grade 13, with 1,200 students. This professional experience included expanding two special events. Canisius students hosted American Week, during which CSI students celebrated U.S. traditions through school events and individual classroom activities. There was a grand finale that included an American lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers with a ‘healthier’ cookie made with cream cheese frosting and fresh strawberries and blueberries. Canisius students also facilitated a four-day English immersion camp held at Spain’s Jesuit retreat compound located in the beautiful coastal town of Celorio. The bus ride home was filled with singing American songs, so we know they learned some English! Canisius students enjoyed a unique educational experience as well as a rich personal experience. The Canisius physical and health education/teacher education (P/HETE) program and Kristin Finn, PhD, professor of teacher education, hosted two local Buffalo Public Schools (BPS) last week at the Koessler Athletic Center.  Fourth graders from BPS No. 17 and BPS No. 54 visited the Patrick Lee Gymnasium on May 30 and June 1 to complete their end-of-year fitness assessments. Clancy Seymour, EdD, assistant professor and director of the physical and health education/teacher education program and teacher candidates in the P/HETE program administered all fitness batteries.  With more than 140 students in attendance, the experience was enjoyable for the fourth graders and allowed the P/HETE program to conduct research while cultivating local BPS partnerships.  A special thanks to Phil Smith ’13 and Tricia Vezina, physical education teachers at BPS No. 17, and Karin Seymour ᾿98, MS ᾿08 and Derek Swader ᾿02, physical educators at BPS No. 54, for their help in coordinating this event.  In addition, thanks to Public Safety Director Kim Beaty who was gracious enough to provide a Canisius peace officer to escort the children from BPS No. 17 to KAC and back to school.

Students and teachers from PS #17 joined members of the Canisius community at the East West Community Garden.

The Canisius East West Community Garden group recently gathered to finish construction of the garden boxes and cut the lawn with a manual mower (no gas mover was used!). Children and their teachers from PS #17 participated and had a wonderful time digging in the soil, finding worms and insects and experiencing the wonders of the outdoors.  Neighbors, as well as representatives from the Oxford Block Club and the Congolese community lent a hand to dig holes for the bed frames.

The community garden at 1032 Lafayette Avenue is a cooperative garden on Canisius’ campus in partnership with the Oxford Square Block Club, PS #17, PS #74, the Congolese Refugee Communities and others. This garden is at the center of the college’s sustainability initiative. It is a place where Canisius community members, students and neighbors can meet, play, work on their raised beds, grow food, eat food and get to know one another. We have a lot to learn from each other!

Dugan is front and center for Stanley Cup playoffs

Eileen Dugan, theatre-artist-in-residence and director of Little Theatre, is being called the “Goddess of the Golden Knights.” She has been doing voice overs during the playoffs for the NHL’s Las Vegas Golden Knights and voiced the the elaborate pre-game show for game one of the Stanley Cup finals between the Golden Knights and the Washington Capitals.  A local actor, director and voice over talent, Dugan says when asked by the team if she could do a “Game of Throne-sy” type of voice, she said ‘of course I can!’

Dugan was interviewed by several major media outlets, including Hockey Night in Canada.

It is my pleasure to announce that Sarah Signorino ᾿04, MS ᾿08,᾿12 has been appointed director of Mission and Identity beginning July 9, 2018.

Sarah has worked in campus ministry for 12 years, most recently as the assistant director.  She participated in more than 20 service immersion trips with Canisius and, in her previous role as co-director of the Be the Light Youth Theology Institute, Sarah focused on building community partners and advocating for social justice in Buffalo.

Sarah is a triple alumna of Canisius, receiving her two bachelor’s degrees, one with a dual major in English and women’s studies and the other with a dual major in political science and religious studies and theology.  She also received her master’s degree in college student personnel administration.

Sarah is the recipient of the I. Joan Lorch Award, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Award, and the Cyril O. Schommer, SJ, Memorial Prize in Religious Studies. She is a member of the Di Gamma and Alpha Sigma Nu Honor Societies.

On Saturday, May 26, the Canisius baseball team won its third MAAC championship in the last six years after the Golden Griffins defeated Monmouth 11-0 in the MAAC Tournament championship game, played at Richmond County Bank Ballpark in Staten Island, N.Y. The win improved Canisius’ record to 35-20 for the season and also gave the Griffs an automatic berth into the 2018 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.

On Friday, June 1, Canisius will open play in the Minneapolis Regional, when the Blue and Gold faces No. 14 Minnesota. That game will be broadcast live on ESPN3, and game time is set for 8 p.m. The Griffs will then play either UCLA or Gonzaga in the second-game of the double-elimination regional on Saturday, June 2. Game time and broadcast network will be announced.

Food Truck Calendar 2018

All food trucks will park in the Bagen Hall lot unless otherwise specified. As dates and times are subject to change, and as we may add one or two more trucks in August, please keep an eye on The Dome for food truck updates throughout the summer.

Additionally, the Sociology Department will host the Massachusetts Avenue Project mobile truck on campus throughout the summer. The purpose of the Massachusetts Avenue Project’s Growing Green Mobile Market is to serve areas of Buffalo where access to healthy, affordable and fresh food is limited. The truck is stocked with a variety of seasonal fruits, vegetables and eggs. Naturally grown or certified organic produce is stocked whenever possible, and prices are generally lower than local grocery stores. Just a few spots remain for BTLI 2018!  The application and nomination deadline has been extended to June 1.

At Be the Light, we study pressing issues of justice and injustice that we can witness right here in Buffalo, NY.  Then, with the help of Canisius College faculty, staff, students and friends, we learn and strategize about what it takes to address them wherever they are.  Through prayer, reflection and study, participants will learn about themselves, their world, and their place in it.  By becoming knowledgeable, faithful, and just leaders, they will become the change they want to see in the world.

BTLI 2018 will take place from July 23-28.  Again, we will accept applications until Friday, June 1, from current high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors.  Each applicant must also receive a nomination from an adult mentor.  Spots are limited.

The total cost of the program is $50, which includes all meals and accommodations in our air-conditioned dorm.  Scholarships to cover this cost are available.  Monetary assistance with out of town travel is not available.

ITS is currently making plans for the labs and instructional technology classrooms (ITCs) for the 2018-19 academic year. The various computer labs will utilize AppsAnywhere as a means to stream software to everyday users. More information about AppsAnywhere can be found here.

Online and hybrid teaching

For more than a decade, Canisius College faculty have taught high quality online and hybrid courses.  In the process, our professors have pioneered methods in this relatively new medium for teaching and learning.

This summer, the Center for Online Learning and Innovation invites online and hybrid instructors to a meetup on Wednesday, June 27 from 6:00 ‒ 7:30 p.m. in the Library Learning Center Classroom.

During the meetup, we can share our experiences in, reflections on, and ambitions for teaching online. Rather than having a formal presentation, faculty should come as colleagues to share their insights and concerns.  In your online courses, what worked for you?  What didn’t?  How do you measure your success?  What would you like to do teaching online that you’re not doing now, either because you’re still planning or building it, or because you face an obstacle of some sort?

We also invite any faculty interested in teaching online or hybrid classes, but who have not yet done so.  Please bring your questions for our seasoned veteran online faculty, and gain valuable insights from those who have built excellent online courses.

Resplendent in blue and gold, the Koessler Athletic Center was filled to capacity for this year’s graduate and undergraduate ceremonies held on May 16 and 19, respectively.  Proud families, friends, faculty and staff were on hand to congratulate members of the Class of 2018.

Canisius alumnae from the Western New York medical community shared their words of inspiration with the graduates.

Allegra C. Jaros ’93, MBA ’96, president of the new John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital, addressed the graduate class on Wednesday evening. Jaros and Rev. Daniel L. Benning, pastor of the Upper Room Church of God in Christ in Buffalo and New York Central Jurisdiction’s Chief Adjutant, received honorary degrees during the ceremony.

Norma J. Nowak ᾿79, PhD, executive director of the University at Buffalo New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences delivered the undergraduate commencement address.

Nowak and the following alumni received honorary degrees during the ceremony:

Edward Burke Carey ’69, president of Carey Realty Investments in Columbus, OH and former chair of the Canisius College Board of Trustees; LeRoi C. Johnson ’71, attorney and acclaimed artist; Daniel P. Starr ’58, PhD, professor emeritus of history at Canisius and longtime director of athletics; and Gerald Zon ’67, PhD, director of business development for TriLink BioTechnologies in San Diego, CA, which provides services for educators and academic researchers in gene therapy, chemotherapy and diagnostics.

The Alumni Association presented the 2018 LaSalle Medal, its highest honor, to Vincent Mancuso Sr.᾿68, MBA ᾿77, retired senior executive vice president, HSBC Bank. The award recognizes outstanding Canisius alumni whose substantial contributions to the college have, over time, advanced the interests and the mission of alma mater.

The Canisius Classes of 1968 and 1958 commemorated their 50- and 60-year reunions, respectively, during undergraduate ceremonies this year. Mancuso celebrated his Golden Jubilee (50-year) reunion.

The Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program at Canisius College also commissioned 13 cadets as second lieutenants during a ceremony on May 18.

In this workshop for Canisius faculty and staff, learn the basics of using Google Sites and related apps to create interactive lessons and training modules.  The summer is a good time to pick up skills for and experiment with quick and easy technologies for teaching and learning.

Google Sites is a simple website builder that’s part of the Google toolset supplied to all Canisius faculty, staff and students, and it requires a lot less time than other web-building tools.  Google Sites is ideal for creating online lessons that contain all sorts of media and even interactive elements.  Other Google Apps-generated media, including forms and slides, embed nicely within a Google Site.  Students can create sites themselves for assignments that foster critical analysis of web-based presentation.   Google Sites is also great for creating training content outside of courses.

Canisius College’s International Relations Program is proud to announce that 10 high-achieving international relations majors were inducted into Sigma Iota Rho (SIR), the national honor society for international studies. With the induction of this inaugural class of eight graduating seniors and two juniors, Canisius College joins more than 170 other colleges and universities across the United States and Europe as an institutional member of SIR. Student members of the organization benefit from participating in a network of like-minded professionals who share a background in international relations.

The newly-established Eta Iota chapter of SIR is led by founding president Caitlin Orgek ᾿18.  Orgek and seven other seniors ‒ Charlotte Bamford ᾿18, Nathan Baumgartner ᾿18, Toria DiStefano ᾿18, Tyler Gates᾿18, Jenna Grainer ᾿18, Asher Havis–Walton ᾿18 and Patrick Murray᾿18 – will proudly wear their SIR honor cords at commencement exercises this Saturday. Megan Poynter ᾿19 and Rachael Sparacino ᾿19, inducted as juniors on the strength of their exemplary academic performance, will return from study abroad to lead Canisius College’s Eta Iota chapter of SIR for the 2018-19 academic year.

USA Today sports writer Erik Brady ᾿76 wrote  an article about Alex Valvo ’16, MSA ’18, an ice hockey referee with NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III and USA Hockey. When he shared his coming out story, Valvo describes how he found a community of support at Canisius and from his fellow officials.

Valvo graduates tonight with a master’s degree in sport administration.  He’ll attend Saturday’s commencement ceremonies as his final assignment as a GA in Event Services.  Valvo starts a new job with an advertising firm on Monday.

Kim Beaty ᾿86 was sworn in as the new director of public safety during a ceremony on Tuesday, May 15. Previously she was deputy police commissioner of Operations and Homeland Security for the Buffalo Police Department (BPD). Beaty replaces Wil Johnson, who will retire this month after serving Canisius with distinction for three years.

Summer hours begin on Monday, May 21, 2018 and end on Friday, August 17, 2018.

College departments may adjust their hours of operation (based on department need) to 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with a 30-minute lunch break.

As communicated by President Hurley, we will also pilot a modified schedule for Fridays for administrative staff.  During the weeks of May 21 through July 27, Canisius will adjust its operating hours on Fridays to 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  Because the college must still meet the needs of students and maintain the operation, certain departments will adopt some modified rules that have been discussed at a departmental level.  From July 27 through August 17, the college will return to the traditional summer hours, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. with a 30-minute break for lunch.  Summer hours are available to administrative staff not enrolled in the collective bargaining unit of the college.

COLI’s D2L Semester End/Start Checklist can help you wrap up your spring semester courses and prepare you to teach in the summer or fall.

We’re overhauling our D2L Tutorial Video Set.  Compared to the old videos, the new tutorials are shorter and show the most efficient methods of using D2L, based on faculty experience and feedback. Plus, they show new features added to D2L in the past several years.  Until they are replaced, the old videos are available to faculty and staff, since procedures in the old and new D2L are mostly the same.

Watch May’s Episode of Kaleidoscope

Program celebrates religious diversity

The Canisius College Video Institute production of the May episode of “Kaleidoscope” premiered earlier this month on WGRZ-TV 2. This 30-minute television program celebrates the religious diversity of our region and is produced in conjunction with the Network of Religious Communities. “Kaleidoscope” rebroadcasts each Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Spectrum Cable Channel 20 and each Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on Spectrum Channel 6 in Olean, NY.

In the first segment, host Stan Bratton, PhD, talks with Fr. Greg Jakubowicz, OFM, campus minister, St. Joseph University Church, about the meaning and commemoration of Pentecost and the Franciscan orders, to which he belongs.

In the second segment, Bratton speaks with Imam Adnan Ahmed of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community about the meaning of Ramadan, keeping the Ramadan fast and the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

Students in the Canisius College Video Institute produce “Kaleidoscope” under the guidance of Barbara J. Irwin, PhD, professor of communication studies and co-director of the Video Institute, and Paula DeAngelis-Stein ’86, MS ’02, a producer with Daybreak Productions, the broadcast arm of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.

Free Basketball Clinic June 2

Boys and girls grades 1-6 are welcome

The Canisius men’s  and women’s basketball teams and Dick’s Sporting Goods will host a free skills clinic on Saturday, June 2 in the Patrick Lee Gym at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The clinic for boys will run from 10:30 a.m – 12:00 p.m., while the clinic for girls will run from 2:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The clinic includes instruction from Canisius head basketball coaches Reggie Witherspoon and Scott Hemer, their staffs and select Canisius student-athletes.

All participants must be enrolled in grades one through six, due to NCAA compliance. The clinic will be capped at the first 100 participants enrolled. All players who sign up receive a special gift from Dick’s Sporting Goods.

Participants must provide their name, age, parent name, parent contact number and mailing address.

Alex Valvo ’16, MSA ’18, an ice hockey referee with NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III and USA Hockey, shared his coming out story with outsports.com.  Valvo describes how he found a community of support at Canisius and from his fellow officials.

“One would think that attending a Catholic school would drive me even further into the closet,” said Valvo.  “In fact it did the opposite.  In my four years at Canisius I was exposed to a world I never got to experience at my rural high school. I met people who were openly gay and proud of it. They weren’t social outcasts; they were actually fun to hang out with.”

Valvo also found support from his fellow officials. “The fears I had about coming out to everyone were erased in just one night.  I could finally officiate a game without a huge weight on my shoulders.”

“No current or former NHL player has ever come out as gay,” added Valvo.  He said his intention in sharing his story was to inspire hope for young hockey players or hockey officials struggling with their sexuality.

A graduate assistant with the college’s Office of Event Services, Valvo will receive a master’s degree in sport administration during Wednesday’s graduate commencement.

Kimberly L. Beaty ᾿86 will be sworn in as the college’s new director of Public Safety on Tuesday, May 15 at 3:30 p.m. in Old Main 223.  The campus community is welcome to attend.  Beaty replaces Wil Johnson who served the college with distinction for 3 years.

Beaty has served as deputy police commissioner of Operations and Homeland Security for the Buffalo Police Department (BPD).  She has served in law enforcement with the BPD for 31 years.

The 3.5 mile course begins and ends at Delaware Park and will take place on Thursday, June 14.  All faculty and staff, whether they are racers, joggers or walkers are invited to join the Canisius College Corporate Challenge Team. The race start time is 6:45 p.m. The Canisius College hospitality tent opens at 5:00 p.m. and Chartwells will provide refreshments before and after the race.

If you don’t want to walk or run in the race but would still like to come have refreshments and socialize, no problem! The hospitality tent entry fee is only $6.00 and includes parking at Demerly Hall for Canisius College participants. Simply RSVP to Mary Braun at braun5@canisius.edu or at Ext. 2240. Canisius College hosts the Buffalo Niagara Partnership’s first Happy Hour for a Cause of the summer on Thursday, June 28 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at The Westin Buffalo (Courtyard), 250 Delaware Avenue in Buffalo.

A long-standing tradition, the Happy Hour for a Cause events allow local professionals to meet and network in a laidback environment while benefiting a local charity. This happy hour will benefit The Buffalo Olmsted Parks Conservancy (BOPC), a community organization that promotes, preserves, restores, enhances and ensures maintenance of Olmsted Parks and Parkways in the greater Buffalo area to guarantee Olmsted Park experiences for current and future generations.

This event has many excellent benefits—it’s an inexpensive charity event, hosted by the college, where participants can relax and enjoy making new connections with like-minded professionals in the area. Baseball Concludes Regular Season This Week

Team battles for first-round bye week

Your Canisius baseball team concludes the regular portion of its schedule this week with a three-game conference series versus defending MAAC champion Marist. Game times this week are noon on Thursday, May 17 and Friday, May 18 with a twin bill slated for Thursday and a single game on Friday.

The Griffs and Red Foxes are locked in a battle with Quinnipiac, Monmouth, Manhattan and Siena for one of the two first-round byes in next week’s conference championships on Staten Island. For more info, visit GoGriffs.com.

Watch May’s Episode of Kaleidoscope

Pentecost, Ramadan topics of this month’s program

The Canisius College Video Institute production of the May episode of “Kaleidoscope” premiered earlier this month on WGRZ-TV Channel 2. This 30-minute television program celebrates the religious diversity of our region and is produced in conjunction with the Network of Religious Communities. “Kaleidoscope” rebroadcasts each Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Spectrum Cable Channel 20 and each Sunday 8:00 p.m. on Spectrum Channel 6 in Olean, NY.

In the first segment, host Stan Bratton, PhD, talks with Fr. Greg Jakubowicz, OFM, campus minister, St. Joseph University Church, about the meaning and commemoration of Pentecost, and the Franciscan orders, to which he belongs.

In the second segment, Bratton speaks with Imam Adnan Ahmed of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community about the meaning of Ramadan, keeping the Ramadan fast and the Ahmadiyya Muslim community.

Students in the Canisius College Video Institute produce “Kaleidoscope” under the guidance of Jamie O’Neil, associate professor of digital media arts and co-director of the Video Institute, and Paula DeAngelis-Stein ’86, MS ’02, a producer with Daybreak Productions, the broadcast arm of the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo.

Debuts on May 17

On May 17, D2L transitions to a new look and feel.  Our usual end-of-semester video for faculty features additional tips to prepare for the new interface.

COLI’s D2L Semester End/Start Checklist can help you wrap up your spring semester courses and prepare you to teach in the summer or fall.

We’re overhauling our D2L Tutorial Video Set.  Compared to the old videos, the new tutorials are shorter and show the most efficient methods of using D2L, based on faculty experience and feedback. Plus, they show new features added to D2L in the past several years.  Until they are replaced, the old videos will continue to be available to faculty and staff, since procedures in the old and new D2L are mostly the same.

This program provides an excellent opportunity to show appreciation and support for your co-workers and to recognize them for a job well done. The Employee of Distinction nomination form is located here.

To nominate a co-worker, explain why you think your candidate is worthy of the award. A list of factors to consider when submitting a nomination include the nominee’s history of accomplishments, level of determination, motivation and interpersonal skills.

All nominations are reviewed by the college’s Employee Engagement Team, which uses the information provided to make a fair and objective selection.

The Employee of Distinction is featured each month in The Dome.  The recipient also receives a non-monetary incentive and is presented with the award by the president and his/her supervisor.
