JIA Lecture To Focus On Refugee Resettlement In Buffalo

The Justice in Action (JIA) working group will present a lecture on refugee resettlement in Buffalo on April 13, 2010 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.  Representatives from Catholic Charities, The International Institute, Vive La Casa, and Journey’s End Refugee Services will speak.  Refugee speakers from countries such as Burma, Bhutan, Vietnam, Napal, Iraq, Congo, Cuba and others will also share experiences of leaving their homeland and resettling in Buffalo.

JIA encourages greater awareness and understanding of the situation of immigrants and refugees who have come to our city to begin a new life.  What is the reality? What part can we play in this reality? Why do people leave their homelands to come to ours?  JIA is comprised of students, faculty, staff and administration who work to coordinate, publicize, and develop initiatives that educate and promote awareness about justice issues.

This event is open to all on the campus as well as those interested from the Buffalo community.  For further information, please contact Sr. Pat Brady at Ext. 2177 or bradyp@canisius.edu.

Canisius Students Create Cancer Awareness Campaign

Canisius College and Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) will hold a news conference on Wednesday, March 31 at 10 a.m. in the Gaylord Cary Meeting Room in the Research Studies Center at Roswell Park to launch the “Check Yo Nutz” testicular cancer awareness campaign. The campaign, the first of its kind in the region, promotes testicular self-examination for men ages 15-40 using informative, relatable and humorous messages.

The “Check Yo Nutz” campaign was originally developed by Canisius students in the spring 2009 course, Persuasion, instructed by Melissa B. Wanzer, EdD, professor of communication studies. Meagan Tremblay ’10, Elyse Krezmien ’09, Sara LaBelle ’10, Ja’Nay Carswell ’09 and David Jackson ’09 conducted research on testicular cancer and designed the campaign. Jackson also created the campaign logo featuring Sammy the Squirrel.

Sammy the Squirrel will make his debut at the news conference, and it is rumored that many of his local mascot buddies will also be there to support Sammy.

For more information contact the Canisius College Public Relations Office at Ext. 2790.
