Campus Ministry Hosts Lenten Lunch

Campus Ministry will host a Lenten Lunch on Wednesday, March 10 from Noon – 1 p.m. in the Campus Ministry Conference Room, Old Main 219.  The topic for discussion will be “The Buffalo Burrito Project-Street Ministry to Buffalo’s Homeless Population.”  The Canisius campus ministry community partnership with Buffalo Burrito Project began in August 2009, and it delivers fresh home-made burritos and a bag lunch.  The Canisius street team walks a 3.5 mile route and serves between 80-120 burritos each Tuesday night.

Deborah Greatrix Tyler, director of the Buffalo Burrito Project, and Chasin Smith ’12, student coordinator for Sigma Phi Epsilon, will share their experience, strength and hope on this direct ministry to Buffalo’s homeless.  Campus Ministry will provide a simple lunch; however, attendees are welcome to bring their own lunch to the event.  All are welcome to attend.

This Lenten Lunch is fashioned after the round table discussions on a contemporary issue of social concern that Dorothy Day from The Catholic Worker held in New York City.

The Burrito Project is a national grass-roots movement that began in Los Angeles and has spread across the world.  The Buffalo Burrito Project began in February 2008 and is an independent chapter that serves Buffalo’s homeless population and the poor in downtown Buffalo.

Eat Well, Live Well Challenge Comes To Canisius

The Wegmans “eat well live well” challenge is coming to Canisius beginning March 14, 2010 to help employees create a healthier lifestyle for themselves.  The challenge has two parts:

  1. “Get in Step” is intended to increase a person’s weekly physical activity by increasing the number or steps a person takes each day.  The college will be giving a free pedometer to all participants; and
  2. Strive for Five promotes healthy eating through behavior change by challenging people to increase the number of cups of fruits and vegetables they consume each day.

The challenge lasts eight weeks, and its goal is to change behavior over time making this a lifestyle change – not a diet.  This will hopefully lead to feeling better, eating healthier and possibly losing a few pounds that may have crept up over the Winter months.  No personal information will be used during the challenge.  It simply requires participants to log the number of steps taken each week along with the number of cups of fruits and vegetables eaten.

There will be informational meetings regarding the challenge on Thursday, March 11 in the Student Center Conference Room at Noon and 1:15 p.m.  Bring your lunch.  Human resources will provide coffee, tea, and dessert.  If you are unable to attend the meeting but would like to participate, contact Dawn Rotterman at rottermd@canisius.edu or Ext. 3151.
