Annual NYS Fire Inspection Coming

The college’s annual New York State fire inspection will be conducted the weeks of April 5 and 12, 2010, and it will take approximately six to eight business days to complete.  Much of the inspection will take place the first week, when many Canisius employees may be off for Spring break.  If you will not be on campus during this time, please plan before you leave for Spring break to consider the following in preparation for the inspection:

  1. Hall and stairways must be kept free of all clutter.
  2. Accumulations of combustible materials in offices and store rooms must be held to a minimum.
  3. Access to fire extinguishers must be maintained.
  4. All extension cords must be taken out of service. Plug appliances directly into outlets or use a power strip.
  5. Maintain the following ceiling clearances in storage areas:
    Sprinklered rooms – 18″…….Unsprinklered rooms – 24″
  6. Keep fire doors closed. Door stops are not allowed.
  7. No candles are permitted, except in the Chapel.

Your assistance prior to your departure is appreciated.  If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Kelly in Human Resources at Ext. 2240.

Old Main – Hughes Street Entrance Closed Today (March 24)

Today (March 24), the cooling tower on the roof of the Bouwhuis Library will be replaced.  A crane will be positioned at the Hughes Street entrance of Old Main and remain there for the entire day.  For the safety of all, please take note of the following items that will impact pedestrian and vehicular traffic in the area:

  1. The sidewalk on Hughes Street that runs adjacent to the library will be closed as of 7 a.m. and re-opened when the crane has left the site.
  2. The Hughes Street entrance of Old Main will be closed to all pedestrian traffic as of 7 a.m. and re-opened when the crane has left the site.  Please use alternate entrances to access the building.  Signs will be posted inside the building directing occupants to an alternate exit.
  3. The ADA parking spaces at the south end of Old Main will be temporarily relocated to the Old Main Parking Lot, located off of Hughes Street between Old Main and Horan O’Donnell.  Two spaces in front of the west entrance into HOD will be identified as ADA parking.
  4. The shuttle service that picks-up and drops off at the south end of Old Main will be temporarily relocated to the Old Main Parking Lot, near the entrance to the Quad.

In addition, the area in the library directly beneath the cooling tower will be closed on all floors as of 7 a.m. until the lifting operations have been completed.  The floor area, located in the southeast corner of the library, will be cordoned off and posted with signs on each floor.  The rest of the library and Tim Horton’s will remain open.

Please be aware of your surroundings and use extreme care when traveling near the work area.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.  If you should have any questions or require additional information, please contact Tom Ciminelli at Ext. 8243.
