March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. Unlike some cancers, however, colorectal cancer is highly preventable and can be detected early through proper screenings. If colorectal cancer is detected at an early stage, 80-90 percent of patients are restored to normal health. Current screening methods include fecal occult blood testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy.

Reduce your risk:

  • Get regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 50, or earlier if you or a close relative have had colorectal polyps or colorectal cancer.
  • Eat a low-fat, high- fiber diet.
  • Drink in moderation.
  • Exercise for at least 20 minutes, 3 – 4 days a week.

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives. If everyone aged 50 years old or older were screened regularly, as many as 60 percent of deaths from this cancer would be avoided. Make your appointment today!
