February’s Child & Family Services February Wellness Paragraph

Each month, the Child & Family Services Employee Assistance Program issues a wellness paragraph containing information to benefit our employees.  This month’s paragraph:

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. and a major cause of disability. One of three American adults suffers from heart attack, stroke, or other forms of cardiovascular disease. About every 25 seconds, an American will have a coronary event. A healthy heart is vital to a healthy mind and a healthy life, so take steps to prevent and control factors that put people at greater risk.

Good health habits begin in childhood. Here are some suggestions for developing heart healthy habits in your family:

  • Parents are role models. Make healthy habits a family priority.
  • Get the whole family physically active. Limit activities that involve sitting like watching tv and being on the computer.
  • Review family eating habits and determine areas in which you can make healthier food choices.
  • Let kids be involved in planning, shopping, and cooking family meals.
  • Eat dinner together to encourage quality family time.
  • Increase water intake and decrease intake of soda drinks and other high sugar juices.

A healthy diet and lifestyle are the best weapons you have to fight heart disease!
