Presidential Convocation Outlines Priorities For Year Ahead

Canisius College President John J. Hurley welcomed faculty, staff and administrators back to campus on Thursday, September 8, during Presidential Convocation in the Montante Cultural Center. President Hurley’s state-of-the-college address outlined his priorities for Canisius in the year ahead and highlighted his long-term goals for the college’s future.

President Hurley indicated that last year’s listening tour helped create an environment at Canisius where “new ideas are surfaced, outdated practices are reevaluated and discarded, and optimism and enthusiasm can take hold.” To keep this positive momentum going, President Hurley announced that he will continue the listening tour, and visit departments and divisions on a two- to three-year cycle.

Study Abroad Information Sessions

The Office of International Partnerships and Study Abroad will host information sessions over the next couple of weeks regarding the various study abroad programs offered by Canisius.  Please note that new programs in Brazil are funded by a FIPSE grant and provide a $4,000 stipend to the selected students.

Also, there is a new program at Sogang University, a Jesuit university in South Korea.  A $1,500 scholarship is offered to two qualified students for this exciting new opportunity. (more…)

First Annual Flute Day Saturday (September 10)

A special concert will be held in conjunction with the First Annual Flute Day on Saturday (September 10) at 7 p.m. in Montante Cultural Center.  It is free and open to the public.

Presented by the newly-formed Buffalo Flute Club, nationally recognized flutist and composer Michael Colquhoun, PhD, will lead a day of flute-related activities, which will culminate with this concert.  The performance features Michael Colquhoun, flutes; and Don Metz; guitar.  The concert will be a performance of Colquhoun’s music; which is an eclectic mix of classical, modern and jazz as well as arrangements of jazz standards by the duo.

Reception For McGoldrick Collection Friday (September 9)

A reception will be held in honor of the current display of Selections from the Collection of Professor James and Rita McGoldrick on Friday (September 9) from 5 -7 p.m. in the Peter A. and Mary Lou Vogt Gallery, located in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.

Gathered from their international travels and gallery-hopping across the decades, these works represent the variety of media and styles that fill the home of Canisius professor emeritus of modern languages James and his wife Rita McGoldrick.  The show remains on view through October 14, 2011.

Upcoming ANGEL Workshops

The FacTS Center will offer a variety of ANGEL workshops during the month of September, including an Introduction to ANGEL.  Three workshops will be offered each week, with one virtual session.  Space is limited, so please register for the workshop(s) here.
