The 2011-12 Canisius College Golden Griffin men’s basketball schedule has been released. This year’s slate includes 13 home games, including non-conference contests versus South Dakota (December 8), Loyola, IL. (December 22) and Binghamton (December 28). Canisius opens the campaign with a four-game road trip that includes a stop at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas (UNLV). The Griffs first home game is December 2 against MAAC favorite Iona. Canisius College Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library will hold its 3rd Annual Banned Books Week in coordination with the annual American Library Association (ALA) commemoration from Monday, September 26 to Friday, September 30.
Each day from noon to 1:30 p.m., a Read-Out will be held inside the library near the entrance to Tim Hortons. Participants will be given three to five minutes to read passages from their own “favorite banned book” or one picked from the list available at the ALA site. Readers may participate on one or all five days. Sign-up boards will be available Friday (September 23) near the library service desk.
Banned Books Week celebrates intellectual freedom, including freedom to read, benefits of free and open access to information, and, also draws attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books …currently and historically. Canisius librarians use this week to encourage dialogue that supports the freedom to access information and express ideas but most of all to encourage and practice tolerance.
Co-sponsors of this event include the Rev. Andrew L. Bouwhuis S.J. Library; Rev. J. Clayton Murrary, S.J. Archives and Balling Special Collections; School of Education, Department of Women’s Studies, Women’s Studies Club, Department of Creative Writing, and Young Adults Learning Transition (YALT).

Sandra Cookson, PhD, professor of English, will read poems from her recently published chapbook, Two Loons Taken for Vultures, on Friday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. in the Bouwhuis Library Reception Area (2nd floor). A reception and book-signing will follow the reading. All are welcome.
