Hi Communication Studies Blog!

I am happy to be back completing another communications internship this semester. My name is Rebecca and I am a senior Communication Studies Major with a minor in Leadership. I will be graduating in May! Last semester, I interned as a Digital Marketing Intern with Mr. Smith. This semester I decided to switch it up and enter the world of non-profits, interning as a Development + Events intern with Make-A-Wish WNY. In this role, am responsible for the fundraising efforts for the organization. There are many fundraising initiatives-working with corporations and foundations, generating donated goods and services (in-kind), developing cause-related marketing campaigns, generating funds for our endowment, raising money in the schools and in the workplace, as well as our internal and external events.

I have about two weeks of my internship under my belt now, and I have certainly been able to really get my feet wet. The women that I am working with are both members of the Young Non-Profit Professionals group that I am a member of, so I actually had been able to meet them a few times prior to starting my internship, making the transition a bit smoother. Make-A-Wish’s annual ‘Power of a Wish’ gala is coming up on March 28th, so my supervisor and I are working on putting together the auction for this gala-everything from inputting the donated items, writing thank you letters to donors, and writing descriptions of what each item is. In between doing that, I have sent letters to wish families still waiting for their wish to be granted to let them know that Make-A-Wish is thinking of them. We have a gift gathering party coming up soon, so I will be helping everyone from the office work at that event, which I am sure will be a great experience as well. Working towards a specific goal-the gala going smooth and successfully is exciting because I will be able to be at the gala and see everyone’s work come to life!

Talk to you soon!

The team made sure I had a great orientation and learned everything I need to know about the company!
