Yesterday was the last day of my Buffalo Zoo Marketing/PR/ Event Planning internship. I was really sad to leave because I loved going there three days a week, and I learned something new everyday. I got to take part in great experiences like going with the PR Coordinator to AM Buffalo when she was on the show talking about zoo memberships. I spent time in the rhino barn and elephant house, and even met the Easter Bunny when I helped work the breakfast with the Easter Bunny event at the zoo!

A few weeks ago, I was able to see a day full of press when the zoo announced that the beloved polar bear Kali was leaving for the St. Louis Zoo sometime in May. They knew all along he was leaving, but the news was still saddening to the people of Buffalo. I was able to meet and see reporters from the major media outlets in Buffalo as they covered the goodbye of Kali. It was nice to see how the zoo handles releasing big news and dealing with media. But not to worry, our zoo is getting Luna’s mother so she will not be lonely!

The best part about this internship was that I learned skills that will help me in my future career. I got to draft press releases and media advisories for the PR Coordinator, I learned what goes into planning major events like Polar Bites and Buffalovefest, and I got to see how a non-profit and well-known organization like the Zoo markets itself around Buffalo. Everyone there was no nice and willing to teach me new things. The Buffalo Zoo is a place I’ve loved since I was a kid, and doing an internship there in a field I’m interested in made it amazing. I will miss them all, but I will be sure to visit my favorite animals at the zoo as much as I can when I visit!  Is it too corny to end by saying this internship was one wild ride?  Now off to the jungle of the real world. AH!
