A girl I used to work with at Aerie called me a few weeks ago about an open house/networking event for a company called TekSystems that she recently started working for. I didn’t really know too much about the company, but I knew she went to school for marketing so I figured this would be a good opportunity. When I arrived at the event, all of the TekSystem employees kept asking me why I felt Sales was the right fit for me. I was extremely confused and kind of put off at first because I never thought I would want to work in Sales. After the initial confusion, the event actually went really well. This company definitely didn’t have the typical “cut throat” sales environment and it seemed that the employees really loved their jobs. Even though I knew this job wouldn’t be for me, I was still able to talk to many of the employees who had degrees in marketing and communications. It was a great opportunity for me to practice my “elevator speech” and interact in a professional environment. Sometimes networking can be beneficial to figure out what field you don’t want to be in. You never know, I still may interact with some of these people in the future.
