Lightboard Studio

If you are teaching an online course, the Lightboard Studio might be for you. The Studio may also be useful to instructors that are teaching a flipped classroom or instructors that want to give more context to a previous or upcoming lecture.

The Studio allows for a professional quality recording at a simple press of the button. Once the recording is started, you can begin your lecture with professional-grade audio, video, and (if you would like) screen recording. Using a transparent glass board and neon markers, you can write down important facts, diagrams, equations, etc. You can even “draw” over PowerPoints, webpages, and other documents or images.

Click on the image below to see how Dr. Craig Rogers, Associate Professor in Economics and Finance, uses the Lightboard Studio to teach his own class:

If you are interested in using the Lightboard Studio, send an email to the COLI staff: coli@canisius.edu.

Invitation to Participate in Halloween Fest

The Afro American Society and USA are joining forces for a Halloween Fest on Halloween night from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m. in the Quad.

The student clubs are hoping that faculty and staff might be willing to assist with providing and giving out Halloween candy to students who are trick or treating in the Quad.

We have all been invited to join them and enjoy the food trucks, a DJ, apple bobbing and more.

Many people have family obligations or other commitments that will prevent participation on Tuesday evening but if you can’t attend and are willing to contribute to the festivities, Halloween candy can be dropped off at the ALANA Center or at the Afro club room.

Thank you for considering their request.  They would love to see friendly faces and to be supported by the broader Canisius community.

Online Faculty Development Course

The OFDC (Online Faculty Development Course) offered by COLI is for full-time and part-time faculty, whether new to D2L, or experienced with technology for teaching. This five-week mini-course prepares instructors to teach online and hybrid courses. The OFDC provides many practical tips for teaching online but more importantly, helps faculty explore new pedagogies for active learning, social presence, and community in courses on the internet.

Additionally, the updated OFDC offers insights on what Regular and Substantive Interactions (RSI) are and how to incorporate RSI into your courses. It also includes information on Panopto, Canisius’s new video content management system, how it works, and how to best fit Panopto into your courses.

The OFDC can help professors craft engaging, interactive online experiences for students, either for all-online courses, or hybrid courses that feature limited use of the classroom. This semester, we are offering one starting November 13th and ending on December 16th. Stay tuned to the COLI Blog and the Dome for more sessions! To RSVP, please check out the COLI faculty development events here.

Cybersecurity Month Tip

It is a good idea to separate out your professional and personal life. On this note, Canisius strongly recommends that you do not mix your work and personal communications and online accounts. Per the Canisius Acceptable Usage Policy, we recommend that you do not use your Canisius Email (i.e., the email ending in @canisius.edu) for personal communications or as the contact email for various personal accounts unrelated to your work at the University.

Please take the time to review any of your personal online accounts and check that you are using a personal email account (such as a free Google Mail/gmail account). Use this external Email address for any accounts unrelated to Canisius University such as personal social media, financial/banking, shopping, etc. Share your personal Email address with friends and family and ask them to contact you there for non-Canisius matters. Use this personal email to also set up another form of Multi-factor Authentication for your Canisius account. You may want to set up an Authenticator App too, particularly if you are in a building that has low cell service.

For more information on cybersecurity, check out FoxPointe Solutions’ tips and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure our World page. Also, check out the Pedagogy Primer Podcast Episode 15, where we interviewed Matthew Gracie and Dr. Justin Del Vecchio, both cybersecurity professionals and faculty in the Department of Quantitative Sciences and the Cybersecurity Graduate Program here at Canisius. In this episode, they talk about prospects for Cybersecurity students as well as ways to stay current on cybersecurity issues and cybersecurity best practices.

Keeping Canisius’ systems safe is a community effort! When in doubt or if you have general questions, contact ITS Help Desk at helpdesk@canisius.edu.

On Thursday, November 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, Mick Cochrane will host a book launch for The Crystal Gavel, a memoir by his late sister.

Click here to add this event to your digital calendar.

The memoir follows Sue’s journey from a childhood marked by poverty, alcoholism and violence through her recovery to her quest to humanize the courts and afford all people a genuine, dignified hearing.

The book has received early praise from readers:

“Rarely do I encounter a memoir so powerful and inspiring. Sue’s story reminds us of our potential to awaken through life’s most heartbreaking challenges…and to navigate with compassion, dignity, and grace.” —Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance

“A memoir that crafts exquisite wholeness from the shards of a wounded life. Sue Cochrane’s humanity, her healing vision, and her valiant heart will take your breath away.” —Pavi Mehta, author of Infinite Vision: How Aravind Became the World’s Greatest Business Case for Compassion

“The Crystal Gavel is a kind of miracle: At once profoundly personal and radically social, it offers a vision of transformation within our hearts and in the often-heartbreaking machinery of our legal system.” Lon Otto, author of three short fiction collections and the novel The Flower Trade

A Q&A, book signing and reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public. Sponsored by creative writing program.
