Endowed Donor Reception

The Endowed Donor Reception was held on Tuesday, November 13 in Science Hall. More than 38 students and 87 donors were present to hear music by the CrescenDONT’s and inspirational speeches by donors and students. Canisius saw an increase in endowed gifts from the previous year by 64 percent, awarded an excess of $3.5 million in endowed scholarships and $1.3 million in endowed programs during the 2017-18 academic year.

Thesis Defense Week

The All-College Honors Program announces its Honors Thesis Defense Week, which runs next Tuesday, November 27 – Friday, November 30. Topics include hazing, climate change, eSports and the opioid epidemic in Buffalo. The defenses are free and open to the public, and primarily take place in Science Hall 1017. See the attached document for more information.

WBBZ-TV “Bragging Rights”

Tune in to WBBZ-TV over the next couple weeks to cheer on your favorite Canisius teams competing on the game show “Bragging Rights.” Students in Professor Barbara Irwin’s “Broadcasting in America” class produced four of the upcoming episodes, which pits two teams of three against one another in a race to answer trivia questions on a variety of subjects.

The Canisius-produced episodes, which feature contestants from the Canisius community, are scheduled to air Tuesday, November 27, Wednesday, November 28, Tuesday, December 4 and Wednesday, December 5 at 8:00 p.m. on WBBZ-TV.

Here are the teams scheduled to compete:

Game 1 – Tuesday, November 27: Canisius College English Department (red) versus Canisius College Quadrangle (blue)

Game 2 – Wednesday, November 28: Canisius College Student Newspaper, “The Griffin” (red) versus Canisius College Video Game Club, “Fusion” (blue)

Game 3 – Tuesday, December 4: Canisius College Undergraduate Student Association (USA) (red) versus Canisius College Communication Department alumni (blue)

Game 4 – Wednesday, November 5: Canisius College Golden Griffins baseball (red) versus Canisius College cross country and track (blue)

Petey, the college mascot, also makes an appearance on the game show as does Matt Gorczyca, assistant director of the Canisius Fund, who served as a guest score keeper.

Dennis Duling Authors New Book

On Thursday, December 6 at 6:00 p.m., the Burchfield-Penney book club will host A Final River to Cross: The Underground Railroad at Youngstown, NY by Dennis Duling, PhD, professor emeritus of religious studies and theology and Gretchen Duling, PhD.

This local and regional study fills the gap in documenting Youngstown’s role in the Underground Railroad in New York State. It also offers further proof of the existence of, support for and operation of the Underground Railroad in Western New York. It is a comprehensive and extensive book meant for both the general reader and scholars. The authors have uncovered a rich treasure of information in newly discovered primary source materials. Learn the compelling stories of the village and its citizens who formed an intricate Underground Railroad network.
