Orange is the New Black’s Laverne Cox to Speak at Canisius

Laverne Cox, known most recently for her leading role on the Netflix hit series “Orange is the New Black”, will speak at Canisius College on Thursday, January 15 at 7p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. Tickets will be on sale starting December 3 at 11a.m. in front of Economou Dining Hall. Ticket sales will then continue out of the Office of Student Life (lower level of Dugan Hall) weekdays from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. until they are sold out. A limited number of tickets are available to Canisius faculty and staff. There is a limit of two tickets per person.

An outspoken transgender advocate, Cox is the first trans-woman to produce and star in her own television show, TRANSForm Me, appear on the cover of TIME magazine [June 9, 2014] and be nominated for an EMMY. She is also the first trans-woman of color to have a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show, Orange is the New Black. She received an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for the role of “Sophia Burset.”

A critically acclaimed actress, Cox has won rave reviews for the groundbreaking role of “Sophia Burset,” an incarcerated African American transgender woman. TIME magazine named “Sophia Burset” the 4th most influential fictional character of 2013. She is also a recipient of the Dorian rising star award for Orange is the New Black.

A renowned, in-demand speaker, Cox has taken her empowering message of moving beyond gender expectations to live more authentically all over the country.

The title of Laverne Cox’s speech at Canisius is “Aint I a Woman.”
