Come celebrate Women in the Arts Week with ArtsCanisius and the Women and Gender Studies program at Canisius College. Events will take place Monday, March 3 – Thursday, March 6. Events include performances of music by women composers, lectures celebrating women’s roles in the classical music field, an art show in the library and an afternoon of performances and lectures by Canisius College faculty and students highlighting women’s roles in music, art, poetry and literature.
The first event for this year’s Women in the Arts Week is a Meet-the Faculty Recital on Monday, March 3 at noon in the Montante Cultural Center. This performance will feature the keyboard music of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel performed by Karen Schmid; a keyboard work by Elizabeth van Hagen performed by Jane Cary; scenes from Rachel Portman’s opera “The Little Prince” performed by James Wright, baritone, Karen Schmid, piano and guest boy soprano, Cole Marcotte. Ellen Barnum will perform Libby Larsen’s “Jazz Variations” for solo bassoon and the program will conclude with Cantio Sacra, Bradley Wingert, director, performing three pieces by women composers.
