Great American Smokeout Tomorrow (November 18)

The Office of Human Resources encourages all Canisius faculty and staff who smoke to participate in the Great American Smokeout which will be held tomorrow (November 18).

Although Canisius has had smoke-free workplace policies for several years, there are still many employees who continue to smoke and may need a little motivation to quit.  This flyer (Adobe Acrobat PDF) gives this year’s information from the NYS Smokers’ Quit Line.  Those who would like to fully quit smoking can also call the college’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for assistance in coping with stress and other factors which are often associated with smoking.

On November 18, 1976, the California Division of the American Cancer Society successfully prompted nearly one million smokers to quit for the day.  That California event marked the first Smokeout, and the American Cancer Society expanded the event throughout the country in 1977.  These events grew out of a 1974 event when Lynn R. Smith, editor of the Montecello Times in Minnesota, spearheaded the state’s first Don’t Smoke Day or “D-Day.”

The Canisius College hockey team will make their final appearances at home for almost two months as they host Air Force and league leading Robert Morris this weekend.  The Griffs host Air Force on Friday (November 19) before meeting Robert Morris on Saturday (November 20).  Both games start at 7:05 p.m. at Buffalo State Ice Arena.

Robert Morris is 6-2-1 overall in its first season of league play. The Griffs are currently in third with a 3-4-3 league record, while the Falcons are 2-3 in conference action.

After this weekend, the Griffs play six straight on the road including games at Frozen Four participant RIT (December 17) and national powers Notre Dame (December 29) and Wisconsin (January 7-8).  Canisius will not be at home again until games against Quinnipiac on January 16-17.
