Hamlin Park Elementary Kids Visit Campus

Students from Hamlin Park Elementary visited the college on Tuesday, November 23 to learn more about the Canisius campus and have lunch in the cafeteria. Their visit was part of a community-based learning component Canisius students participate in through FYS 101: Exploration of Academic Writing: Teaching for Equity and Social Justice. The Hamlin Park students were able to gain a better understanding of the college environment as the FYS students experience it.

Canisius students in FYS 101 partner with Hamlin Park Elementary School under the guidance of Mary Beth Zanghi at Hamlin Park, to support classroom learning. Students evaluate their own experiences and the community service experience against the writing of authors related to issues such as diversity, race, socio-economic status, culture, and gender and the social justice movement that promotes educational and socio-economic equity for all learners in all educational settings.

This experience is facilitated and supported by Sr. Patricia Brady, director, community-based learning; Elizabeth Brandjes, director, educational partnerships; and Karen Dutt-Doner, PhD, professor of education, School of Education & Human Services.
