John Sloan, The Swing

Anne Reed, adjunct professor of fine arts, will give a talk entitled “Women as Metaphor in the Work of John Sloan” today (November 15) at noon in the Regis Room.  This lecture is part of the ArtsCanisius Meet-the-Faculty series, and is free and open to the public.

Reed will discuss how John Sloan’s images of women reflect the complexities of the American city in the early 20th century.  Sloan’s representations of laundresses, prostitutes, seamstresses, and other typical figures of the European tradition are contextualized within the American urban milieu as metaphors of the city itself.
