Griff Fair Incentive for Faculty and Staff

This year’s Griff Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, March 13, 2024, in the Science Hall Commons from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

We have made every attempt to bring a diverse group of employers based on our majors. Career Fairs are a relatively painless way for students to connect with employers who will have careers, internships, and summer opportunities. Thanks to our faculty and staff, students are well-prepared to take the next step in their careers. Our students are dedicated to their educational pursuits and have had exposure to research and experiential opportunities.

To continue offering these events for our students, recruiters must feel their time on campus is well spent. We are offering all sorts of prizes for students and are marketing the fair heavily but nothing compares to having faculty and staff support.

To this end, the registered employers are sponsoring a faculty and staff incentive.  The faculty or staff member who refers the most students to the fair will win a $200.00 certificate to Angeline’s restaurant on Delaware Avenue. When students sign in to the fair, we will ask who encouraged them to attend. Let the referring begin!

New Exhibit Inspired by Dr. Nathan Fox’s Research

Dr. Nathan Fox’s research is the inspiration behind the newest exhibit in the Peter A. and Mary Lou Vogt Gallery in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.

“Games and Sequences: Figures from My Research” showcases Fox’s research interests, which lie at the intersection of combinatorics, number theory and theoretical computer science.  These four figures were inspired by his doctoral thesis and academic pursuits.

Many thanks to Fox for sharing these figures and we hope that our campus community enjoys this collection.

Harrington Named Chair of Jesuit Student Success Network

The Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities has named Mark Harrington, EdD, founding chair of its Jesuit Student Success Network.

The Jesuit Student Success Network was officially recognized by AJCU in January 2023. It was established as institutions increase their focus on student success and retention by establishing and growing offices and staff in this area. The Network is comprised of professionals and administrators from Jesuit colleges and universities with expertise in student success and retention who collaborate with the purpose of sharing strategies and best practices.

“I am honored to serve the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in this capacity and represent Canisius through this leadership opportunity,” says Harrington. “Since the establishment of the Jesuit Student Success Network, I have been involved with my Ignatian colleagues in building the network with the ultimate goal ensuring our students, across the diversity of our campuses, cross that commencement stage.”

Every month, the Senior Student Success Officers (SSSOs) meet to discuss student success best practices, and ways in which they can collaborate with the shared Jesuit mission. In February, the SSSOs met for their inaugural forum at Loyola University Chicago where they were able to spend time learning from one another about mission-driven initiatives on their respective campuses. A highlight of the forum was spending time in conversation with the one and only Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt who highlighted take-aways from her recent book Wake Up With Purpose!: What I’ve Learned in My First Hundred.

“It was truly a joy to learn from not only my peers across the Jesuit institutions, but from national icon Sister Jean who has been walking with students throughout their collegiate journey for decades.”

As the chair of the Jesuit Student Success Network, Harrington leads the executive board and serves as a liaison to the SSSOs at AJCU member institutions.

Mark Harrington is assistant vice president for student success at Canisius University. He also serves as director of the Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration (HESAA) program and assistant professor of teacher education and leadership.

Canisius in the News

The Buffalo News recently spoke with James Nowak for a February 27 story titled “New FAFSA Form Delays Push College Decisions Way Behind Schedule.” In the article, Canisius’ associate director of enrollment and financial aid speaks about the challenges that colleges, students and their families are facing as a result of the overhauled FAFSA process. Nowak also details the proactive approach Canisius is taking to help mitigate and minimize the issues faced by families. Click here to read the story.

Malini Suchak, PhD, weighs in on why our feline companions have a phobia of water in the latest edition of Inverse, an online science, technology and culture magazine. According to the professor and chair of ABEC and anthrozoology, a cat’s aversion to water isn’t due to a preservation instinct, as cats can swim and float if necessary. Rather, Suchak says, a cat’s hydrophobia comes from the water’s effects on their fur coats. Click here to read more.

Novena of Grace

The Jesuit Community of Western New York invites the Canisius campus to join them in praying the “Novena of Grace,” in honor of St. Francis of Xavier, from March 4 – 12.

A Novena is a nine-day program that offers a set of prayers to St. Francis Xavier for a special intercession. It concludes on March 12, which is the date in 1622 when both Ignatius Loyola and Francis Xavier were declared saints.

According to Rev. Fred Betti, SJ, chaplain of mission and ministry, the Novena has been held for more than 124 years in Western New York, traditionally hosted by St. Michael’s and St. Ann’s churches, and attracts the faithful from far and wide. Over the course of the years, “many apparent cures and prayers have been answered,” says Father Betti. He continues, “The Novena was so popular in Buffalo culture that former Canisius faculty member, Roger Dooley, in his novel, The House of Shanahan, set an entire chapter of the protagonist’s adventures inside St. Michael’s Church during the March Novena.”

This year, in light of the reorganization of the Jesuits, the Novena is being offered at Christ the King Chapel, which is now home to a historic statue of Xavier – recovered from the former St. Ann’s Jesuit Church on Broadway.

The origins of the Novena date back to 1634 in Naples, Italy when a Jesuit, (Mastrilli) suffered a traumatic brain injury and, at the point of death, he had a vision of St. Francis Xavier and was instantly cured.

The Novena will be offered on the following days and times:

Wednesday, March 6 / 5:15 p.m. Mass

Saturday, March 9 / 12:05 p.m. Mass

Sunday, March 10 / 9:30 a.m. Mass

Changes in the Wiki

The Canisius University Wiki, a long-time host for policy and procedural documents, is getting a new look and feel as it moves to the Atlassian Cloud Platform. This is scheduled for Wednesday, February 28th, 2024, and will bring some improvements, but also some temporary disruptions.

  • If you own or maintain wiki pages, please check them on or after February 28th for broken links, missing content, or other possible concerns. Email helpdesk@canisius.edu if you require assistance.
  • In general, the next two weeks would be a good time to look for outdated pages, page content (including links), page permissions and especially file attachments.
  • Since the wiki must use different web addresses, links on web pages and spaces across the university will need updated, and some may be broken until fixed. Please be patient, and report broken links to helpdesk@canisius.edu.
  • To an extent possible, all old wiki pages will redirect to the new wiki’s home page. There, users can navigate to the things they need.
  • Links to wiki pages within old emails, news, and social media posts will expire and will not work. Please watch for new links, or go to the wiki using the MyCanisius Portal. The Wiki can be found on the righthand side of the MyCanisius portal:
  • If you send emails using boilerplate mail text that points to wiki spaces, your boilerplate text will need to be updated.
  • If you own or maintain wiki pages that you know are linked on the main Canisius site, in Google Sites, or in any other location, those links will need to be updated after February 28.

Black Ice Safety

Even through spring-like temperatures are upon us, the early mornings and late nights are still around freezing. Make sure you still follow winter walking procedures during these times.

  • Walk cautiously and avoid icy walking surfaces whenever possible.
  • In darkness, icy glazed spots or “black ice” can be difficult to see.
  • In cold temperatures, approach with caution and assume all wet slick spots on walking surfaces are frozen.
  • If you must step on the ice – take short steps and shuffle your feet like a penguin.
