The East-West Community Garden at Canisius will be the topic of conversation on the next episode of “Crossroads,” scheduled for broadcast this Sunday, September 2.
Featured guests include Nancy M. Rourke, PhD, associate professor of religious studies and theology, and Veronica A. Serwacki, executive associate to the dean of arts and sciences. The duo will discuss the history of how the East-West Community Garden was cultivated at Canisius, its significance relevant to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and future plans for the area surrounding the site.
“Crossroads” is a monthly radio program produced by the Network of Religious Communities and is hosted by Rev. Patrick Lynch, SJ, professor of religious studies and theology. It airs on the first Sunday of each month at 6:00 a.m. on MIX-96 (96.1 FM) and at 6:30 a.m. on JACK-FM (92.9).

Faculty members looking to build online lesson content or have students who build websites will want to check out Google Sites. This simple and versatile website-building toolset is part of Google Drive, and the Center for Online Learning & Innovation has created a set of tutorial videos showing from beginner (how to get started) through advanced (using forms, drawing and other Google applications). Additional tutorials and other materials will be added to the COLI Google Sites Guide in the coming months – so keep a lookout.

The Canisius College Student Retention Committee will hold its first meeting for the academic year on Tuesday, September 11 from 2:30-4:00 p.m. in Old Main 219. The group is committed to enhancing and reinforcing a culture of undergraduate and graduate student support and success resulting in consistent and steady increases in student achievement, retention and graduation rates.

Adjunct Faculty Information Session
September 4 class to provide tips for 2018-19 academic year
The Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) invites all new, returning and current adjunct professors to an Adjunct Faculty Information Session to help prepare you to teach during the 2018-19 year. Learn about employee resources, the library, the college mission, and technology for teaching and learning. Refreshments will be served.
The session is on Tuesday, September 4 from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. in Old Main 115.
Just before the Information Session, there is a faculty tour of the Bouwhuis library, beginning at the Library Service Desk at 4:00 PM. Bouwhuis Library is a complex organization with a lot to offer faculty, students, and staff through its services, facilities and staff expertise. Our librarians are keen to support your teaching and research, as well as your students’ learning. The Library tour is a great way to get to know your Library.
These events are not mandatory but are a fantastic way to get up to speed quickly on the essentials for teaching at Canisius College. Adjunct faculty who are teaching at Canisius for the first time this fall can benefit but returning adjunct instructors are also welcome.

Workshop: D2L Essentials
Beginner training session on September 7 covers the very basics
If you are a new professor at Canisius or have been teaching at the college for a while, consider learning (or getting a refresher) of D2L. COLI offers a workshop that’s perfect for this.
In this training session, professors get the very basics of teaching in D2L:
- Upload files so students can get them
- Organize your course content
- Set due dates so students can see them (in multiple places)
- Build a gradebook
This session gets you started using D2L and using the internet to save time and effort teaching. Later, you can discover all sorts of other features useful for teaching classes in your particular discipline.
The next session of the D2L Essentials workshop takes place on Friday, September 7, from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. in Old Main 119

Give Me Some Truth
Acclaimed author and Professor Eric Gansworth reads from his newest novel on September 11
“Sometimes hilarious, sometimes heartbreaking, always heartfelt.” That’s just one of the many complimentary reviews of Eric Gansworth’s newest novel Give Me Some Truth.
The acclaimed author and professor of English will read from his latest work on Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. The event is free and open to the campus community. Paintings, included in the novel, will be on display at the event. Audience members who purchase the book at Talking Leaves or at the Canisius event will also qualify to enter a drawing for an original Eric Gansworth painting inspired by the novel.
Give Me Some Truth is a follow up to Gansworth’s first young adult novel, If I Ever Get Out of Here. The story returns to the Tuscarora Nation reservation where high school senior Carson Mastick reasons that, if he can get a band together, he can win the local Battle of the Bands and get off the reservation.
Give Me Some Truth is Gansworth’s 11th book.

Plan to make your donation at the annual Red Cross Blood Drive September 6 and 7
The American Red Cross brings its annual blood drive to campus for two days next month. On Thursday, September 6 and Friday, September 7, members of the campus community can donate blood during the hours of 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. in the Palisano Pavilion.
Walk-ins are welcome or interested participants can make an appointment by visiting redcrossblood.org.
