Canisius in the News

Both Peter Galie, PhD, professor emeritus of political science, and Kathleen Davis, vice president for enrollment management, made appearances on “Buffalo’s Buzz” program on WBBZ-TV.

Galie talked about how New York State voters will have the chance to approve the creation of a Constitutional Convention on November 7. If approved, the ballot could set in motion a do-it-yourself lawmaking process.

Get to Know…

As assistant director of student engagement, Phil Cialella ᾽07 helps coordinate student programs, including signature events such as Welcome Week, Fall Fest, Griff Fest and New Student Orientation. He is also the advisor for the Undergraduate Student Association (USA) and Student Programming Board (SPB). Phil is known for bringing a sense of humor and positivity to everything he does.

As an alumnus, Phil knows first-hand the value of a Canisius education. Now, he enjoys watching the transformation of students.

“I see the nervous faces at orientation and then four years later at commencement I see their pride and excitement,” says Phil. “It is really special and makes it easy to come to work every day.”

Phil served as lead mentor, along with Nancy Wallace, PhD, associate dean of the School of Education and director of educational partnerships, on a week-long service-immersion trip to Guatemala this past May through Campus Ministry.

“The trip was very eye-opening for me and really made me think about practicing what we preach in terms of being men and women for others and fighting for social justice.”

In his spare time, Phil likes to visit with family and explore sites in Buffalo such as Canalside, Larkinville or Riverworks. He tries to incorporate many of the city’s hotspots into student programming.
