Pictured left is Mark Castner, director of the Braun-Ruddick Seismograph Station. He represented Canisius on Saturday, October 6, at the annual Earth Science Day hosted by the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center. Visitors  received an up-close look at a seismograph in operation, as kids jumped up and down to simulate an actual earthquake.

Jerimiah Wagstaff ’20, (pictured to the right) also attended the event. He is a pre-engineering major and Castner’s lab assistant.

Hockey Home Opener Tonight

Free tickets available for faculty and staff

Come join President Hurley tonight, Friday, October 13, at HARBORCENTER as the Canisius Hockey Team opens its 2017-18 season on Faculty Staff Night. All faculty and staff can pick up free tickets for themselves and family members at the Human Resources office until 4 p.m. today. Faculty and staff can also receive two free tickets at HARBORCENTER by showing their Canisius ID. Game time is 7:35 p.m. and all tickets include a non-alcoholic drink coupon that can be redeemed at HARBORCENTER concession stands. Make sure to arrive early as President Hurley and 1957 graduate John Christiano unfurl the team’s championship banner prior to the opening face-off against Robert Morris. The first 1,000 fans on Friday receive a free replica banner.

The two teams also meet Saturday, October 14 at 7:35 p.m. at HARBORCENTER. It’s Poster Night and fans who arrive early will receive a free schedule poster.

Swim Teams Kicks Off Busy Weekend

Cheer on your favorite Golden Griffin teams

Seven Golden Griffin teams are home this weekend in one of the busiest two-day periods on the 2016-17 athletic calendar.

Kicking things off will be the home openers for the men’s and women’s swim teams. The Griffs host perennial MAAC power Marist at 10 a.m. today, Friday October 13 in the Flickinger Center pool. There is no admission charge.

In addition, the men’s and women’s cross-country teams host their annual alumni meet Saturday, October 14 at Delaware Park. Races start at noon and 12:45 p.m.

Women’s soccer continues its quest for playoff positioning as they battle St. Peter’s at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs are 7-6-1 on the season.

Rowing will be at the West Side Rowing Club on Sunday, October 15 as the team hosts the Head of the Niagara. Racing begins at 10 a.m., weather permitting.

Enjoy Concert Band and Meet-the-Faculty Recital

The Canisius College Concert Band directed by Paul D. Biddle will join forces with the Erie County Wind Ensemble, John Maguda, director, this Saturday, October 14 at 5:00 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.  Each ensemble will perform works on their own and then combine for several selections. Additionally, each group will perform a work for oboe solo and concert band with guest oboist Paul Schlossman.  Tickets for this concert are $5. All proceeds support the college’s Concert Band.

On Monday, October 16, the second Meet-the-Faculty Recital takes place at noon in the Montante Cultural Center and features percussionist Tiffany Nicely.  Percussionists Ringo Brill, Gabriel Gutierrez, Cory Shelton and Jamie Sunshine will accompany Nicely in a program of music for Mexican marimba and traditional malinke drumming.  This performance is free and open to the public.

Center for International Education Open House

Faculty and staff are invited to wine and cheese reception

The newly-created Center for International Education will host a wine and cheese reception for faculty and staff members on Wednesday, October 18 at 3:30 p.m. on the lower level of the Student Center (003).

The Center serves as a central location for the many international initiatives at Canisius and includes the following offices: International Student Programs (Kathleen Brucato, director), International Partnerships and Study Abroad (Brian Smith, director), and the newly-established Institute for Global Engagement, directed by Timothy Wadkins, PhD. The Center is part of an initiative to expand international experiences at Canisius and includes opportunities for faculty-led academic programs.

COLI Brown Bag Meetups

Bring your lunch and share tech tips!

The Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) hosts its next Brown Bag Meetup on Wednesday, October 18 at noon in Old Main 115.  The topic is Desire2Learn.

On most Wednesdays in the fall and spring semesters, COLI hosts a Brown Bag Meetup.  Keep an eye on The Dome for announcements of upcoming specific meetups. Bring your lunch!  Meet with other Canisius faculty and staff to share tech tips. Share your latest project, completed or otherwise, for feedback and suggestions.  Show us what you’re doing in your classes or in your research, using web-based technologies.  As always, COLI staff will be on hand to answer questions, and share the latest tips, resources and other things we’ve recently discovered.

Canisius to host Kahindi Lekalhaile

Speaker to discuss animal welfare

The Canisius Zoological Society is pleased to announced that Kahindi Lekalhaile, director of public affairs for the African Network for Animal Welfare (ANAW)  speak on Thursday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the Regis Room. ANAW works throughout Africa to promote protection and humane care of all animals. This talk is free and open to the public.

Volleyball Clinic

Fun Fridays with Canisius Volleyball

Women’s volleyball coaches and players will hold a volleyball clinic on Friday, October 20 from 6 – 8:00 p.m. in the Koessler Athletic Center main gym.

ALL girls and boys ages 8-13 are invited to train side-by-side with a parent or a friend, have a chance to work together and have some FUN! The cost is $20 per attendee and $30 for one attendee and guest.

 #THAT’S NOT LOVE

 “Escalation” chronicles an abusive relationship

The Canisius College sexual violence prevention team and the Undergraduate Student Association will screen the film “Escalation,” on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 5 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.

The film follows a college relationship from its euphoric beginning through its escalation to abuse. Students, faculty and staff are invited to attend the screening, which will be followed by a facilitated discussion.  Mary Travers Murphy, executive director of the Family Justice Center, will provide opening remarks.

Golden Griffin Counseling Seminar

The Four Components of Heroin Addiction and Recovery

The Golden Griffin counseling seminar presents “Four Components of Heroin Addiction and Recovery,” on February 24, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge.

The seminar/discussion will be facilitated by Davina Moss-King, PhD. Moss-King is the president and owner of Positive Direction and Associates, Inc. and has more than 25 years of experience counseling individuals with substance use disorders. She is also an adjunct professor of counseling and human services at Canisius.

A light breakfast will be provided. The cost is $20 for students with valid ID and $35 for professionals.
