Office of Multicultural Programs Now ALANA Student Center

The Office of Multicultural Programs (OMP) has changed its name to the ALANA Student Center. ALANA equals African American, Latino/a American, Asian American, and Native American student communities at Canisius College. The 2010-2011 Friends of the Office of Multicultural Programs (OMP) Advisory Board, which included student representation, recommended the new name. LeRoi C. Johnson, Esq., a member of the Canisius Board of Trustees, chairs the intercultural advisory group.

“ALANA is a nationally used acronym and this change puts the ALANA Student Center (ASC) into the mainstream of higher educational nomenclature,” said Sababu Norris, director of the ALANA Student Center. (more…)

Host Families Needed For Canisius College International Students

The Canisius Community Family Program, formerly known as the Host Family Program, is searching for Canisius faculty, staff, alumni or friends of Canisius to host a Canisius international student for the new school year.  All Canisius community families of any size are encouraged to sign up and volunteer their time toward a valuable and rewarding experience.  Administered by the Office of International Student Programs (ISP), the program is designed to help international students access a special network that reaches beyond the college campus and into the Buffalo community.

Canisius College international students visit the Buffalo harbor.

The students are matched with families who may share common interests with the students.  The families introduce the student to the sights, sounds and tastes of Buffalo, as well as the experience of a true American family. The students do not live with their community families.

Families are asked to include the student in family gatherings or outings at least once a month.  ISP will host two events each semester to support communication between the participating families and students.  The first event will be September 17 so contact ISP office soon to be paired with an international student.  Email Nicole Pizzutelli at deckern@canisius.edu by September 2, 2011.

Help make our students feel welcome in our Canisius community!
