President Hurley Announces New Mission Statement, Strategic Plan

In May, the Canisius College Board of Trustees approved a new mission statement and strategic plan, entitled A Transformational Education. I am delighted to formally unveil them to you today on the strategic plan website. Here you will find the revised mission statement, new vision and values statements, and of course, the detailed plan. These documents represent a bold new direction for Canisius, one that will enhance the living and learning experience for our students, promote academic excellence and our Catholic, Jesuit mission, and secure our future.

Currently, we are embarking on a new approach to link our strategic planning with budgeting and assessment. In the coming months, divisions, units and departments of Canisius will begin crafting their plans in concert with the university-wide goals, objectives, and strategic actions of this plan.

I want to thank the members of the Long-Range Strategic Planning Committee for their excellent work on the plan over the past year and for the valuable contributions that faculty, students, and staff have made to the planning process through our campus forums.

As we are trying to conserve paper and resources, a limited number of printed copies of the plan are available. Please utilize the website, which is accessible on the Canisius homepage, as your information source on institutional planning and encourage friends, colleagues and alumni to visit it.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to contact my office.

myCanisius Portal Website Now In Beta Testing With Select Students

myCanisius, a new campus portal website, is now in beta testing with a select group of approximately 30 Canisius students.  The portal will be available for all students at the start of the Fall semester.

It is designed to make online campus tools, messages, resources, news and information centrally available online on one screen with one sign-on.  Users will be able to directly access Email, SCT Banner resources, ANGEL and other online tools without having to independently log into those separate websites.  Also, users will receive custom messaging that will notify them of registration holds, overdue bills, advisement alerts and more.

A myCanisius portal designed for faculty and staff will launch during the Fall semester.  myCanisius is being implement by Information Technology Services (ITS) under the leadership of Walter Drabek, Director of Administrative Computing, in collaboration with a group of Canisius administrators, faculty and students.  The portal uses software developed by the CampusEAI Consortium and was purchased by the college under a grant arrangement with CampusEAI.

July Is UV Awareness Month

This month’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP) wellness paragraph talks about the dangers of UV rays and skin cancer.

UV Awareness Month
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States with approximately one American dying from skin cancer every hour!  One in five of today’s children will someday have some form of skin cancer.  Additionally, long term exposure to the sun can lead to potentially blinding conditions such as cataracts and macular degeneration, as well as premature aging of the skin and damage to your body’s immune system.  Fortunately, there are easy ways to protect yourself from the damaging UV rays of the sun:

  • To ensure your eyes are protected, wear sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.
  • Limit your time in the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are the greatest.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher and be sure it protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use water resistant sunscreens and don’t forget to reapply often, usually every two hours.
  • Use cosmetics with sunscreens with at least an SPF of 15.
  • Dress to block the sun. Wear a hat with a brim all the way around to shade your face, ears and the back of your neck.

If you are a parent, be sure that you are modeling appropriate sun safety so that your children will pick up these habits early on. And remember, if you have fair skin, red or naturally blond hair, or light colored eyes…..you produce less melanin, which makes you particularly susceptible to skin damage.
