President’s Town Hall Rescheduled

Dear Faculty and Staff:

Because of an inadvertent scheduling conflict with the faculty-only forum on Thursday, President Hurley’s Town Hall meeting is going to be replaced with a meeting for all staff and administrators to review the staff engagement survey results. This presentation will take place this Thursday, March 2, from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. in the Regis Rooms.  The Town Hall meeting has been rescheduled for April 20 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m., also in the Regis Rooms.

The review of the staff engagement survey results and a discussion of next steps will be led by Lauren Young, director of institutional research and effectiveness, and Linda Walleshauser, associate vice president of human resources and compliance.  The engagement surveys have been an important vehicle for campus feedback and have provided a critical baseline of information about faculty and staff attitudes and perspectives.

Thank you to all of those who participated in the survey. We hope you will be able to attend Thursday to continue your involvement in the conversation and learn about the next steps.

Canisius Alumnus and M&T Bank President Passes Away

czarnecki-markCanisius College is saddened to report the passing Mark J. Czarnecki MBA ’91.  The Board of Trustees member died Sunday, February 26 after an extended illness. He was 61.

Czarnecki was president and chief operating officer of M&T Bank, and among the most well-respected bankers in Western New York.  A 40-year veteran of M&T, he began his career as an assistant branch manager in 1977 and went on to hold numerous managerial positions in retail banking, business banking, commercial lending, securities and investments.  Czarnecki was named president of M&T in 2007 and chief operating officer in 2014.

Upon receiving the Canisius College Distinguished Alumni Award in 2010, Czarnecki recalled “M&T Bank was a very small place in 1977.  Building a business that now competes in six states and is one of the largest in America has been a thrill.”

Similarly rewarding for Czarnecki was M&T’s groundbreaking partnership with Buffalo’s Westminster Community Charter School.  The goal of its board, which he chaired, was to make Westminster a model for urban education.  Under Czarnecki’s leadership, Westminster was transformed from one of the worst schools – in terms of student performance – to one of the best.

Ash Wednesday Services

Ash Wednesday is recognized as an especially important day of prayer by dozens of Christian communities, including Catholics, Lutherans, Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Anglicans and many Evangelical churches. Come to Christ the King Chapel to receive your ashes and begin the 40-day time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving known as Lent.

ash-wednesday-flyer-2017Ashes will be offered at the following times:

12:05 p.m. (no music) and 8:30 p.m. (music)

A non-denominational Ash service will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Drop-in Ash distribution and prayer will be offered from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m.

Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and giving for dozens of Christian communities. This year, Campus Ministry’s Lenten programming echoes the words of Jesus from the Cross: “I Thirst.” Consider places where you and others thirst for something greater by participating in some of the Lenten practices. Consider devoting time to prayer by attending weekly Adoration or joining a faith-sharing group. Hear Rev. Greg Boyle, SJ, speak about kinship and how gang members in Los Angeles thirst for a second chance at life.
