“I am blessed—really blessed—to come to ‘work’ every day with people who I respect and love—including fellow administrators, faculty and students. Somehow even on the most difficult and demanding days there is some sort of sunshine, some moment of illumination. And so often we as a group make a difference in someone’s life.”
Barbara Porter
Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences
Barbara Porter has been an associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences since 2004. She holds a PhD in English with a minor in film from SUNY Buffalo. Barbara has been at the college for more than 30 years and has served in various capacities ranging from teaching in the English Department and Women and Gender Studies Programs to functioning as the associate director of the Career Center.
As an associate dean, she helps students with a wide variety of interests and concerns, and is always moved by what students teach her about their lives and what it means to come of age in today’s world.
In addition to her role as associate dean, Barbara directs the English as a Second language (ESL) Program and assists with academic advisement for international students as well as for students planning to study abroad.
Her professional interests include sociological and ecocritical perspectives on American and global literature and she is also currently teaching for the Environmental Studies Program.
Did you know… Barbara is deeply connected to nature and any activity that takes her outdoors. You can often find her working in her rose garden, walking a woodland path or kayaking in some quiet place.
