Canisius Recognizes Employee Accomplishments at Celebration of Service

Canisius College honored the service milestones of more than 60 employees today in the Montante Cultural Center, during the college’s annual Celebration of Service. President John J. Hurley, Richard A. Wall, PhD, interim vice president for academic affairs, and more than 200 family members, friends and Canisius community members were in attendance. The event acknowledged faculty, staff and administrator retirements, and those who have reached their 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50-year service anniversaries.


Srs. Virginia and Loretta Young  received a standing ovation from the Canisius community and a hug from President Hurley in celebration of their combined 100 years of service to the college.

The ceremony began with an invocation by Susan A. Fischer, associate campus minister, and a welcome by Dr. Wall. President Hurley and Dr. Wall presented the citations.

Peter, executive associate to the associate vice president for academic affairs, honored for 20 years of service; and Gregory K. Reeds, PhD, associate professor of kinesiology, celebrated 25 years of service.

Following the presentation of 20- and 25-year citations, Cantio Sacra performed several musical selections under the direction of Bradley Wingert.

This is the 12th year that the college has held the Celebration of Service. Employees who have reached five, 10 and 15 years of service are honored at the Employee Recognition Ceremony each fall.

Catch Dr. Thomeer on TV or Radio this Sunday

Watch Marcus L. Thomeer, PhD, co-director of the Institute for Autism Research, on WIVB TV Channel 4’s By the People show this Sunday, April 28 from 6:00 – 6:30 a.m.  Dr. Thomeer will discuss Autism and the programs offered by the college’s Institute for Autism Research.   By the People is hosted by Debra Park, associate vice president for Marketing and Communication.

If you can’t watch the TV show, tape it, and listen to Dr. Thomeer discuss Autism on WEDG 103.3, WHTT 104.1 or WGRF 97 Rock also at 6 a.m. on Sunday.

SMART Board Users Group Today

The April meeting of the SMART Board Users Group (this is the last meeting of this school year) will be held TODAY in SH1017 from 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

The purpose of this group is to share ideas and learn new integration strategies for using the SMART Board in the classroom. If you don’t use a SMART Board, but are interested in learning more, please attend. Resources for using a SMART Board will be shared.

Senior Day for Women’s Lacrosse on Saturday

Your red-hot women’s lacrosse team hosts its final home game of the season this Saturday when Marist pays a visit to the Demske Sports Complex. Face-off is slated for 11 a.m.

Canisius has clinched a share of the MAAC crown. The Griffs (11-4/5-0) will win the title outright with a win and earn the top-seed in next weekend’s conference championship. A Red Fox win will give Marist (8-8/4-1) a share of the crown and the top-seed.

Baseball Hosts Marist This Weekend

Your Canisius (28-10) baseball team hosts Marist in a key weekend series at the Demske Sports Complex. The Griffs currently reside in fourth place in the MAAC with a 7-5 league mark, while Marist sits a spot ahead with an 11-4 league record. The top four teams qualify for the MAAC tournament over Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday’s twin bill starts at 2 p.m. while Sunday’s single game will star at noon. The Canisius basketball and hockey staffs will host a cook-out for members of C-Block during the first game on Saturday.

The Griffs and Red Foxes are the top two offensive teams in the league, while their pitching staffs run second and third.
