Best-selling author Aryn Kyle will speak as part of the 2012 Contemporary Writers Series on Wednesday (February 29) at 7:30 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. The event is free and open to the public.
Kyle is the author of the novel The God of Animals and Boys and Girls Like You and Me, a collection of stories. Her fiction has appeared in The Atlantic Monthly, Ploughshares and Best American Short Stories, among others.

The Canisius College’s Celebration of Service, scheduled for Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center, will honor faculty and staff members who will be retiring in 2012. Those who are planning on retirement from Canisius College in 2012, either before or after the April ceremony, are asked to contact the Office of Human Resources at Ext. 2247.

Student Academic Support Services (SASS) has released its procedures and guidelines for proctoring exams. The Canisius College main site for proctoring exams for individuals with disabilities, as well as make up exams for the general student population, is located in Student Academic Support Services (SASS) in Old Main 004.

Opera-Lytes warms the hearts with a program called “Love Songs and Madrigals” tomorrow (February 25) at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The concert will feature the music of well-known American composers Richard Rodgers, Leonard Bernstein, and Gwyneth Walker, as well as love songs from the Broadway stage, love madrigals, and other popular love songs. Additionally, Canisius College music major Emily Yancey will perform. Admission is free and open to the public. Click here for more information.

ArtsCanisius presents Women in the Arts Week to celebrate Women’s History Month. This celebration features several musical performances highlighting women performers and composers as well as a music history lecture. The festivities begin on Monday (February 27) at noon with a Meet-the-Faculty Recital featuring Anna Mattix, oboe & English horn; Betsy Reeds, flute and Susan Schuman, piano in the Montante Cultural Center. Admission is free.
Other scheduled events include:
- Thursday, March 1, 7:30 p.m., Montante Cultural Center – Buffalo’s Ladies First Big Band created by bassist Jennifer May. Get out the dancing shoes and get ready for a real treat as the Ladies First Big Band makes its first visit to Canisius. Tickets are $10 general admission and $5 for students, and can be purchased here (https://griffpay.canisius.edu/C20497_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=29) or at the door.
- Friday, March 2, 7:30 p.m., Christ the King Chapel — organist Barbara Harbach and Canisius College voice majors Jena Abati, Rachael Bosak and Emily Yancey highlight “Women Organ Composers from the Renaissance to the Present” and vocal works by Barbara Harbach and 19th Century composer Louise Reichardt. Admission is free.
- Saturday, March 3, 7:30 p.m., Montante Cultural Center — The Alabaster Box Gospel Choir, Karen E. Williams, director presents a program entitled “ALABASTER BOX: The Gospel According to HER!” Admission is free.
- Monday, March 5, noon, Regis Room South — the festival closes with a music lecture given by Barbara Harbach, PhD, professor of music, University of Missouri at St. Louis which highlights “21st Century Women Composers.” Admission is free.
