Canisius College will mark the upcoming beatification of Victorian Catholic theologian John Henry Cardinal Newman by the Roman Catholic Church with a panel discussion of Newman’s work and its continuing significance to the role of Catholic colleges and universities on Monday, September 20, 2010, at 3 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge, Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center.
On September 19, 2010, in Birmingham, England, the beatification ceremony will take place for Cardinal Newman, one of the most influential Catholics of the 19th century. Cardinal Newman produced works in theology (Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine), literature (Apologia Pro Vita Sua), and education (The Idea of a University) that are now regarded as classics in their fields. His writings on the role of the laity, the church in the modern world, ecumenism, and religious freedom so influenced the Second Vatican Council that he is often seen as the “invisible father” of that council.
Cardinal Newman will be proclaimed “blessed” by Pope Benedict XVI himself during his papal tour. Beatification is a step in the process toward sainthood in the Catholic Church.
Panelists for the Canisius event include John J. Hurley, president, Canisius College; Sister Denise A. Roche, GNSH, PhD, president, D’Youville College; Msgr. J. Patrick Keleher, director of the Newman Center, University at Buffalo; and James M. Pribek, S.J., PhD, associate professor of English, Canisius College. Scott A. Chadwick, PhD, vice president for academic affairs at Canisius, will serve as moderator.
