Dads and Daughters Dollar Day is Tonight
Women’s basketball hosts an evening of inexpensive fun
Attention dads and daughters of all ages: Looking for a fun and inexpensive night to spend some time together? Tonight, Friday, November 10, when your Canisius women’s basketball team opens its 2017-18 season against Colgate is Dads & Daughters Dollar Night. All tickets are only $1.00 and all concession items (hot dogs, popcorn, etc.) are just $1.00. In addition, the merchandise stand will run Dollar Day sales throughout the game for selected items such as hats and t-shirts.
Coach Terry Zeh and his staff welcome back 10 letter-winners, including all-MAAC second team preseason pick Sara Hinriksdottir.

Enjoy two recitals by and for the Canisius college community
ArtsCanisius presents the Student-Faculty Recital on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 3 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. This concert features student performances from the studios of Melissa Thorburn and Bryan Eckenrode, adjunct professors of fine arts.
On Monday, November 13, at noon in the Montante Cultural Center is the Meet-the-Faculty Recital. It is a true showcase of the talents of the college’s faculty and staff, featuring a performance by Cantio Sacra under the direction of Bradley Wingert. Cantio Sacra is a vocal ensemble made up of members of the college’s faculty and staff.
Both of these events are free and open to the public. We look forward to seeing you there.

Inspiration for the Musical “Come from Away” to Speak at Canisius
Tuerff to present “How Kindness to Strangers Can Heal the Divide”
Kevin Tuerff, whose story was the inspiration behind the Tony Award-winning musical Come from Away, is coming to Canisius. He will give a talk entitled “How Kindness to Strangers Can Heal the Divide” on Monday, November 13 at 7 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge. All are welcome to attend.
Tuerff was on a flight from Paris on September 11, 2001 after U.S. airspace was closed in the wake of the attacks. His plane, among many others, was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. The welcome that he and the others stranded in Gander received is a continual source of inspiration for him. Now, Tuerff sees a parallel situation in the global refugee crisis and thinks we can learn much from Gander when it comes to welcoming refugees.

Digital Humanities Speaker Series
November 14 event features Dr. Jonathan Lawrence
On November 14, the 2017 Digital Humanities Speaker Series continues! Join us in Lyons Hall, Room 418 at 4:00 p.m. to hear Jonathan Lawrence, PhD, an associate professor of religious studies at Canisius College, speak about his journey in digital scholarship and his latest project.
What does digital humanities mean and how does it relate to research and teaching in higher education? Professor Lawrence will describe the impact of changing technology in his experiences as a student, teacher and scholar. He will share examples of how technology allows us to do traditional research activities in new ways as well as examples of new options that are possible with technology. Lawrence’s Religion in Western New York Project examines religious diversity through oral histories, statistical data and archival materials. He will also share some examples of ways he has incorporated digital humanities into course activities.
Lawrence is currently engaged in an ethnographic study of religious diversity in the Buffalo area. He is an ordained minister serving a small protestant congregation in North Tonawanda and working with Buffalo’s interfaith community.
The Digital Humanities Speaker Series highlights pioneering work in digital humanities, and inspires faculty and students to consider, experiment with and collaborate on new research projects or pedagogical methods employing digital technologies. For more information, visit www.canisius.edu/dh

COLI Brown Bag Meetup
Bring your lunch and share tech tips
The Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI) hosts its next Brown Bag Meetup on Wednesday, November 15 at noon in Old Main 115. We will be discussing Google Apps: Drive, Docs, Forms and even YouTube and Calendar.
On most Wednesdays in the fall and spring semesters, COLI hosts a Brown Bag Meetup. Keep an eye on The Dome for announcements of upcoming specific meetups. Bring your lunch! Meet with other Canisius faculty and staff to share tech tips. Share your latest project, completed or otherwise, for feedback and suggestions. Show us what you’re doing in your classes or in your research, using web-based technologies. As always, COLI staff will be on hand to answer questions, and share the latest tips, resources and other things we’ve recently discovered.
