Get to Know…

James Phillips, security officer, Department of Public Safety

James Phillips is responsible for monitoring the Canisius College parking ramp to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff.

But many students also consider Phillips a friend.

Because he knows some students are away from home for the first time, Phillips says he makes sure to greet all with a smile.  Many stop and chat with Phillips before heading to classes.

“I want them to feel safe and welcome as part of the Canisius community.”

Phillips says he is willing to help in any way he can. And he means it!  He carries a kit in his car with oil and transmission fluid so he can help students having car trouble.  “Most have never put either in their cars!” he laughs.

The biggest reward, says Phillips, is when students introduce him to their parents, who appreciate that he watches over their children.

A native of Hamlin Park, Phillips enjoys attending Canisius baseball games as well as men’s and women’s basketball games. He participates in a Christian ministry where he contributes to various community causes. This fall he supported several churches gathering school supplies.

A 20-year veteran of the Air Force, Phillips has a son and four grandchildren, whom he enjoys spoiling.

Employee Recognition Programs Announced!

As part of our ongoing engagement efforts, the Human Resources Department is pleased to announce the Employee of Distinction program. This program provides staff with an excellent opportunity to show appreciation and support for their coworkers and recognize them for a job well done.

The Employee of Distinction Nomination Form is located here:

To nominate a coworker, explain why you think your candidate is worthy of the award. A list of factors to consider when submitting a nomination, such as the nominee’s history of accomplishments, level of determination and motivation, and interpersonal skills are also provided on the form.

Upon supervisor approval, all nominations will be reviewed by the college’s Employee Engagement Team, which will use the information provided in the application to make a fair and objective selection. Each month, the Employee of Distinction will be featured in The Dome. He or she will also receive a non-monetary incentive and will be presented the award by the president and his/her supervisor.

Please consider nominating a co-worker each month for this program in recognition of the talents and accomplishments of our Canisius College campus community! Nominations are due by the 15th of the month and recipients will be announced during the first week of the following month.

Please contact the Human Resources Department at Ext. 2240 with any questions.

Ideas to Action Box

As part of our ongoing engagement efforts to improve communication, the Human Resources Department is introducing a new initiative that will provide all employees an additional opportunity to express their opinions: the Ideas to Action Box. The goal of this new program is to provide employees with additional opportunities to contribute feedback and process improvement recommendations in a confidential manner. Employees will also have the option to identify themselves or not.

The following options are available:

  • One physical box next to the Human Resources notice board in Old Main 100
  • One virtual box available here.

All ideas submitted through the Ideas to Action Box will be reviewed by the senior leadership team. Any employee who submits a process improvement idea that is implemented will receive recognition in The Dome and a prize.

Please contact the Human Resources Department at Ext. 2240 with any questions.

The remaining prize baskets include:

Donated by ROTC – cooler on wheels, water bottle, tumbler, mug, padfolio, nylon drawstring bag

Donated by Admissions: Fleece blanket, large T- shirt, baseball cap, water bottle, flip flops, tech gloves, umbrella.

When you give to the United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, not only does your gift help those in need in our community, it also allows the United Way to do the work that no one nonprofit can do alone. Please consider giving a gift this year.

Also, please note that your donation can be designated directly back to Canisius College! Help us to achieve our goal to increase participation from 72 to 100 donors!
