Canisius Establishes WNY Teacher Residency Program

The Center for Urban Education at Canisius College is proud to announce the establishment of the Western New York Teacher Residency program. Slated to launch in fall 2018, the program is supported by a two-year grant from the Cullen Foundation. Through this new residency program, aspiring educators in the college’s graduate education programs complete master’s level coursework while building their skills under the guidance of experienced teachers and leaders in high-need schools and districts.

“Similar to medical school residencies, where physicians are trained in hospitals alongside practicing clinicians, residents in this new program will co-teach for a full year alongside veteran educators who will coach and gradually ease them into more responsibilities throughout the school year,” says Jeffrey R. Lindauer, PhD, dean of the School of Education & Human Services. He explains that urban teachers need extended experiences in the field to meet the needs of school-dependent students. “The Cullen Foundation grant enables Canisius to develop an effective and sustainable teacher residency program and we are extremely grateful for its support.”

The Western New York Teacher Residency program requires interested graduate students apply for a residency position. Approximately 10 individuals will be selected for the first year and an additional 10 will be selected for the second year.

Employee of Distinction Program

Just a reminder that all nominations for this month’s Employee of Distinction are due by Wednesday, November 15. This program provides an excellent opportunity to show appreciation and support for your coworkers and to recognize them for a job well done. The Employee of Distinction nomination form is located here.

To nominate a coworker, explain why you think your candidate is worthy of the award. A list of factors to consider when submitting a nomination are the nominee’s history of accomplishments, level of determination, and motivation and interpersonal skills. Upon supervisor approval, all nominations will be reviewed by the college’s Employee Engagement Team, which will use the information provided in the application to make a fair and objective selection. Each month, the Employee of Distinction will be featured in The Dome. He or she will also receive a non-monetary incentive and will be presented with the award by the president and his/her supervisor.
