James Phillips, security officer, Department of Public Safety

James Phillips is responsible for monitoring the Canisius College parking ramp to ensure the safety of students, faculty and staff.

But many students also consider Phillips a friend.

Because he knows some students are away from home for the first time, Phillips says he makes sure to greet all with a smile.  Many stop and chat with Phillips before heading to classes.

“I want them to feel safe and welcome as part of the Canisius community.”

Phillips says he is willing to help in any way he can. And he means it!  He carries a kit in his car with oil and transmission fluid so he can help students having car trouble.  “Most have never put either in their cars!” he laughs.

The biggest reward, says Phillips, is when students introduce him to their parents, who appreciate that he watches over their children.

A native of Hamlin Park, Phillips enjoys attending Canisius baseball games as well as men’s and women’s basketball games. He participates in a Christian ministry where he contributes to various community causes. This fall he supported several churches gathering school supplies.

A 20-year veteran of the Air Force, Phillips has a son and four grandchildren, whom he enjoys spoiling.
