As we approach the Thanksgiving and Christmas season let us take time to slowdown in prayerful reflection and in gratitude for our lives. One way to respond to this gratitude is by doing direct community service with and for others.
Here are four ministry offerings with our community partners in the City of Buffalo.
Option 1: Friends of Night People: Friday, November 22, 4:30 p.m. – 7:15 p.m.
Help prepare and serve a meal in the dining room of Friends to the Night people. Transportation is provided. Space is limited. To sign up contact, Joe Van Volkenburg, vanvolkj@canisius.edu x2875
Option 2: The Burrito Project: Tuesday, November 26, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
The Burrito Project provides fresh home-made burritos to the poor and homeless population in downtown Buffalo. The project is a street ministry to some of the most vulnerable and forgotten of our society. We prepare the burritos from 6:00-7:00 p.m. and we then walk a four mile route in Downtown Buffalo from 7:15 – 8:30 p.m.-Transportation is provided and a support van follows us as we walk. To sign up, contact Joe Van Volkenburg, vanvolkj@canisius.edu x2875
Our students who serve with these programs throughout the year are exposed to the gritty reality of poverty. When having conversations with the poorest and most vulnerable of God’s children we often see ourselves in the other. They can be powerful experiences for us and we urge you to consider joining us.
Option 3: The Red Kettle Campaign: – Salvation Army of Buffalo
The Red Kettle Campaign supports Salvation Army of Buffalo’s outreach to the poor and homeless in Buffalo. You can register and choose a time and location on their website. http://www.registertoring.com/WebPages/ Andrea Glinski ’01 is the volunteer coordinator and she will contact you. You may contact Andrea directly with questions at Ext. 6220.
Option 4: Adopt a Teenager: from St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy
St. Luke’s Missions provide Thanksgiving and Christmas to thousands of families.
You can participate by providing personal care items for a teenager. St. Luke’s has suggestions on what to purchase and the cost is minimal. For more information, contact Joe Van Volkenburg at vanvolkj@canisius.edu Ext. 2875
