The Joseph J. Naples Conversations in Christ & Culture Lecture Series presents Stanley Hauerwas, the Peter Canisius Distinguished Lecturer, who will give a lecture entitled “Suffering Presence: 25 Years Later” on Friday (March 9) at 7:30 p.m. in Grupp Fireside Lounge.
Hauerwas is the Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Ethics at the Divinity School of Duke University. Although he is usually identified as an ethicist, his work covers such a broad range that in 2001 Time magazine referred to him as “Americas Best Theologian.” The author or co-author of more than 30 books, Hauerwas delivered the prestigious Gifford Lectures in 2001. His work A Community of Character: Toward a Constructive Christian Social Ethic was selected as one of the 100 most important books on religion of the 20th century. Hauerwas recently authored a memoir entitled Hannah’s Child: A Theologian’s Memoir (Eerdmans, 2010), as well as War and the American Difference (Baker Academic, 2011). The lecture is free and open to the public.
