The Canisius College Office of Veterans Services and Army ROTC invite the campus community to join in remembering the sacrifices of America’s 25 million veterans by participating in the following events to mark Veterans Day:

On Friday, November 11 at Noon, Canisius will hold a Veterans Day observance in front of Bagen Hall at the college’s Greatest Generation Memorial.  In addition to remarks by President John J. Hurley and Rev. John P. Bucki, S.J., director of campus ministry, the Canisius community will pay special respect to the more than 6,000 service members, who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan, by conducting a reading of the names of those who died in these conflicts.   The roll call is expected to last more than six hours.  Anyone who is interested in being a reader is encouraged to contact Sarah McMahon (Army ROTC) at Ext. 3235 or Andrew Overfield (Veterans Services) at Ext. 8259.

As part of the National Roll Call, Canisius will also observe a “minute of silence” at 2 p.m. to honor the fallen.  Canisius is one of 177 schools nationwide, and the only school in Buffalo, to participate in the Roll Call.

President Hurley will cut the ribbon on the Canisius Veterans Lounge earlier in the day, to mark the official opening of the college’s Veterans Center on the first floor of Lyons Hall.  The Veterans Center will provide a lounge for veteran students to relax, study and socialize with other veteran students, and have access to the coordinator of both on- and off-campus support resources.  Watch Under the Dome for details of an upcoming open house for the campus community.

As a show of service and pride, all Canisius faculty and staff who are veterans are encouraged to wear their ribbons or medals on Veterans Day.  Medals tell a story of service, sacrifice, honor and accomplishment.  By wearing them on Veterans Day, Canisius veterans can tell their story to the entire college and help teach students the true meaning of citizenship and freedom.  For those who do not have their military decorations, yellow ribbons will be available at the Greatest Generation Memorial event. Canisius veterans can also contact Andrew Overfield at Ext. 8259 to arrange delivery prior to November 11.

On Saturday, November 12, those interested in learning more about leadership are encouraged to attend a discussion facilitated by LTC Brian Gibson entitled “A Time to Serve, a Time to Lead” at 8:30 a.m. in the Regis Room.  LTC Gibson is a U.S. Army Air Defense Officer, who is currently attending the prestigious US Army War College.
