The Canisius College School of Education and Human Services has been awarded 10 minimum-time AmeriCorps member positions with the 2011-2012 AmeriCorps Builds Lives through Education (ABLE) program.  This year was a very competitive year, as The Service Collaborative of Western New York received 30 percent more requests than they had available slots.

The ABLE program has partnered with Canisius to provide ten-week service opportunities for Canisius students in Lackawanna Middle and High Schools; Sweet Home Middle and High Schools; Tapestry Charter School; Tapestry Charter High School; The Nativity Miguel Schools (St. Monica’s and St. Augustine’s); St Joseph’s University School; and the Charter School for Applied Technologies.

ABLE allows for individuals to serve at a school focusing on the needs of students in K-12 grade.  Through this meaningful experience, individuals receive a living allowance of $440 bi-weekly and a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,175 which can be applied to tuition or payment of student loans.  Members will commit to completing the service requirement of 300 hours of service (30-35 hours per week for 10 consecutive weeks) in the spring semester, specific dates to be determined in collaboration with the school partners.

Interested Canisius College students should send a resume and general cover letter to Elizabeth C. Brandjes, director of educational partnerships, at brandjee@canisius.edu by November 30 for consideration.  Click here (Adobe Acrobat PDF) for more information.
