D2L: Automatic Zero Feature

In D2L, instructors now have the Automatic Zero feature. This features allows instructors to automatically grade dropboxes and quizzes as 0 after the due date.

For example, let’s say we have a dropbox due today at 11:59 p.m. If we have the Automatic Zero feature turned on, any submission after 11:59 p.m. today (so 12:00 a.m.M tomorrow and onward) will be automatically graded 0 in the dropbox.

This feature can be quickly activated in the Grade Settings screen. We also recommend treating ungraded items as dropped while using this feature. It will prevent confusion in the future.

For a step-by-step tutorial, check out how to setup the Automatic Zero Feature here.

Reminder: Panopto Video Lifespan

By default, video uploaded to Panopto has a limited lifespan. The total lifespan is roughly five years, though it is broken down into two stages:

  • 13 months after last view, the video will be sent to Archive (it won’t be deleted, but it will need to be manually “reactivated”)
  • After 4 years in Archive, the video will be deleted

If you do not want the video to be sent to Archive, you need to at least view a part of the video.

More information can be found on the Panopto Canisius Wiki page and questions can be sent to helpdesk@canisius.edu.

Course Content to be Removed from D2L

Canisius University maintains five years of course content in D2L. On or after October 1, 2024, ITS will perform a routine purge of course content prior to and including the spring 2018 semester. This will delete all content uploaded or created by professors and students in the 2017 and spring 2018 courses, as well as the course spaces and semester headings through to and including Spring 2018.

Since there is no possibility of recovery, please be certain you have exported and saved any of your course content prior to Summer 2018 that you wish to save by October 1st, 2024.

Representatives from Honeywell Inc. recently visited Canisius to present Dr. Sheridan and Krit Marohn with a check for $10,000 to sponsor the Chemistry Olympiad.

The funds will be used to offset costs associated with students’ preparation and participation in the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad. The Chemistry Olympiad is a local, national, and international competition designed to stimulate and promote achievement in high school chemistry. It is sponsored nationally by the American Chemical Society and hosted locally by Canisius University. Honeywell’s Buffalo Research Lab has supported the Western New York Chapter of the International Chemistry Olympiad for more than 20 years and has donated more than $250,000 in support of this initiative since 2002.
