WGRZ-TV Channel 2 and The Buffalo News reported on Canisius University’s plans to develop and grow a community-driven teacher pipeline. The initiative is being funded by a generous grant from The Cullen Foundation of Western New York.
Emerita Professor of Communications Barbara Irwin received a national shout-out from Al Roker on July 11. The NBC Today host and weatherman took to social media to promote Creating Reading Rainbow: The Untold Story of a Beloved Children’s Series. Irwin co-authored the book with series co-creator Tony Buttino Sr. and education leader Pam Johnson.
The Canisius University Board of Trustees appointed five new members to fill outgoing positions. The new members will each serve three-year terms, which became effective on July 1, 2024. The Canisius University Board of Trustees formulates and recommends policy to Canisius President Steve Stoute. The new Board of Trustees members are:
• Jack J. Dempsey ’83, of Edina, MN, senior advisor of Norwest Equity Partners and adjunct professor at the University of St. Thomas;
• Rev. Jason G. Downer ’03, MS ‘06, SJ (ex-officio), superior of the Jesuit community at Canisius University;
• Jesana D. Gadley ’20, of Buffalo, vice president for community strategy and emerging talent lead at M&T Bank;
• Anthony B. Habib ’95, of Amherst, president of Pellicano’s Marketplace; and
• Crystal J. Rodriguez-Dabney, JD, of Buffalo, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.
Officers for the Canisius University Board of Trustees during the 2024-25 academic year are: Chair Brian M. Murphy ’95, Vice Chair Cindy L. Odom ’90, Treasurer Robert L. Baumet and Secretary Cecelia R. Gotham ’13, MS ’15.
Canisius University is proud to be recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) for its exceptional support of transfer students. The institution is among 228 colleges and universities nationwide to earn a spot on PTK’s Transfer Honor Roll, which recognizes those schools that foster robust transfer pathways and empower community college students to achieve excellence and success in their academic pursuits.
The Transfer Honor Roll is determined by 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students, including college cost and financial aid, campus life, admission practices and bachelor’s degree completion. This year’s honor roll recipients demonstrated outstanding outcomes in the following key areas: percent of transfer students into the undergraduate population; bachelor’s degree completion rates; the number of credits transferred toward a degree major; and the percent of transfer students receiving merit-based financial aid.
Twenty-nine Canisius University alumnae earned a place on Business First’s 2024 list of “Power 200 Women.” The annual ranking identifies the most influential women who are helping to shape the Western New York region by way of their positions as business executives, nonprofit leaders or entrepreneurs. The rankings consider time spent in a leadership position, prominence of the company or organization and its number of employees, as well as the person’s community involvement.
Buffalo Business First is calling for nominations for their 40 Under 40 awards. Help make sure Canisius is represented in this prestigious list of local leaders by nominating an outstanding young alum who is making an impact in Western New York. Buffalo Business First notes that nominations lacking any piece of required information will be disqualified, so University Communications has created this Google Form to gather necessary details and streamline the submission process.
Winners must be 39 or younger as of November 14, 2024.
Winners must be available to accept the award in person at a November 14 event.
Winners must live and work in the eight counties of Western New York (Erie, Niagara, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Allegany, Wyoming, Genesee and Orleans counties).
