Campus Candids

Nearly 60 members of the Canisius community participated in the college’s inaugural Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 18. The day of education, solidarity and service was held in honor of the African-American community. The commemoration began around 9:00 a.m. with opening remarks and an overview of the history of Juneteenth. Faculty, staff and students then divided into groups and dispersed into the neighboring community to participate in various clean-up efforts. Afterwards, participants regrouped on campus to hear stories surrounding the history of Juneteenth and the struggle for freedom and liberation from members of Tradition Keepers: Black Storytellers of WNY.

The commemoration marked the start of an important tradition at Canisius, to inspire conversation and action in the college’s ongoing work towards anti-racism, diversity, equity and inclusion.

Clancy Seymour Co-Editor on New Publications

Clancy M. Seymour, EdD, is a co-editor on two new versions of the Curriculum and Assessment Guidance Document (CAGD2), recently released by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education and Dance (NYS AHPERD).

The CAGD2 is a resource that connects the revised New York State Physical Education Learning Standards (2020) with guidance regarding curriculum and assessment recommendations for K-12 physical education practitioners and administrators in New York. The purpose of the publications is to provide developmentally appropriate content and sample assessments in physical education that will allow students to acquire the skills, knowledge, confidence and motivation through participation in quality K-12 physical education programs.

The Curriculum and Assessment Guidance Document is broken into two separate guides: an elementary and secondary version. In addition, the CAGD unpacks the revised New York State Physical Education Learning Standards (2020) and includes an amended adapted physical education services section.

Clancy Seymour is an associate professor and director of health, physical education and sport pedagogy at Canisius. He co-edited the CAGD2 with Alisa James, PhD, professor of physical education at SUNY College at Brockport.
