Canisius in the News

The Buffalo News recently featured English and psychology graduate Joanah Perkins ’19 in a story entitled “From St. Luke’s to law school: Joanah Perkins blazes her own path.” Both Joanah and her sister, Sydnie Perkins ’16, MS ’20, assistant director of communications, virtual engagement and data for the Office of Alumni Engagement at Canisius, attended St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy home school from kindergarten through eighth grade. Joanah attributes her success to those who have surrounded her with support, including her mentor Mike Taheri ’82, a Buffalo lawyer and mentor of Joanah’s and Amy Betros HON ’09, co-founder of St. Luke’s Mission of Mercy.

Watch This Month’s Episode of “Kaleidoscope”

The Canisius College Video Institute production of the July episode of “Kaleidoscope” premiered earlier this month on WGRZ-TV 2. This 30-minute television program celebrates the religious diversity of our region and is produced in conjunction with the Network of Religious Communities. “Kaleidoscope” will rebroadcast each Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Spectrum Cable 20 and each Sunday at 8:00 p.m. on Charter 6 in Olean, NY.

Every year since 1937, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has celebrated the stories from the Book of Mormon in the Hill Cumorah Pageant. It is one of the world’s largest outdoor theatrical productions. In the first segment, Dr. Stan Bratton talks with Neil Pitts, president of the Hill Cumorah Pageant about the annual pageant, its production and why it will end in 2020.

“Helping end homeless … one family at a time” is the tagline for a critical program dedicated to minimizing the trauma of homeless for families in Western New York. In the second segment, Dr. Stan Bratton talks with Grace Lindsey, volunteer coordinator and Luanne Firestone, executive director of Family Promise of WNY.

Students in the Canisius College Video Institute produce “Kaleidoscope” under the guidance of Barbara J. Irwin, PhD, professor of communication studies and co-director of the Video Institute, and Paula DeAngelis-Stein ’86, MS ’02.

Faculty and Staff Immersion East Side

The Philosophy Department invites those interested to participate in the second annual Immersion East Side Faculty/Staff Seminar from Wednesday, August 14 – Friday, August 16.

The Immersion East Side Program began as an Ignatian Seminar for students with a field component involving Buffalo’s East Side communities. As the program expands, we are inviting faculty and interested staff to participate in the seminar, in community-engaged research and other aspects of the Immersion East Side Program. To give faculty and staff a feel for what we do with the students and the areas of focus important to our program, we are offering a three-day summer immersion for faculty and staff. Prior to the immersion, readings will be sent out to help faculty and staff prepare for the trip. In addition, we ask that those interested commit to occasional meetings during the fall 2019 semester to meet with community partners, further reflect on the immersion experience, explore research and teaching opportunities related to the seminar and plan for future events that bring Canisius together with its East Side partners. There will be opportunities for optional weekend activities such as attending services at a Black Church, a jam session at the Colored Musician’s Club and touring the African-American Heritage Corridor.

All expenses will be covered and include reading materials, food and transportation. Participants will receive a $250 stipend. Please use the Google Form to indicate your interest by Monday, July 22. Click here to view an article on last year’s seminar.
