On Friday, March 29, the Institute for Classical and Medieval Studies (ICMS) will welcome Jeff Brubaker, PhD, associate professor of history at SUNY Geneseo, for a discussion entitled “The Forms of Unity: Medieval Attempts to Heal the Great Schism.” The event will take place at 3:30 p.m. in Grupp Fireside Lounge.

The Great Schism divided Christianity into the Latin West and Byzantine East during the medieval period and has been the subject of much historical and theological investigation. Instances of dialogue to end the Schism occur frequently in the later Middle Ages, but have been seen by historians as hopeless or doomed to fail in their goal to achieve Christian unity. Dr. Brubaker will call this narrative into question and suggest that both sides saw the advantage of restoring unity.

The event is free and open to the public. Attendees are invited to gather in Grupp Fireside Lounge in the Student Center for tea and refreshments prior to the talk at 3:00 p.m.
