Campus Candid

The Canisius rowing team concluded the home portion of its spring schedule with a regatta on Sunday morning at Tonawanda Creek (the race was originally scheduled for the West Side Rowing Club, however ice in the channel forced a change of venue).

During a break in the action, Canisius dedicated a shell in honor of Daniel P. Starr ’58, HON ’18, PhD, a professor emeritus of history and the longtime director of Canisius College athletics.

De La Pedraja Named Distinguished Faculty

The Canisius College Alumni Association will confer the Kenneth L. Koessler Distinguished Faculty Award upon René De la Pedraja, PhD, during Spring Honors Convocation on Friday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Montante Cultural Center. The award, presented annually, recognizes a faculty member for teaching excellence and outstanding contributions to the academic world.

A professor of history at Canisius, De la Pedraja is respected by students and admired by colleagues, many of whom have come to rely on him as a mentor. His courses are known for their academic rigor, which he infuses with his vast knowledge of history, his extensive travels abroad and engaging storytelling. Students say De la Pedraja promotes critical thinking and analytical skills and a passion for international issues.

De la Pedraja’s areas of discipline include the history of the Western Civilization, the history of Latin America from 1830 to present, and the wars of Latin America. He is one of the leading forces who designed the college’s Latin American Studies Program.

Town Hall Meeting

All Canisius faculty and staff members are invited to attend the next Town Hall Meeting with President Hurley and the vice presidents tomorrow, Tuesday, April 30 in the Grupp Fireside Lounge from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m.

This Town Hall will be a series of roundtable discussions with President Hurley and the vice presidents. A similar format was used in the past and people responded very positively. This will give vice presidents a chance to talk about some of the key priorities in each respective area and discuss, as a smaller group, any thoughts or questions. We will do these in 15-minute sets to give participants an opportunity to talk with several groups. As we found last time, this led to a number of informative and engaging conversations and we look forward to doing this again.

Refreshments will be served.

Annual Shredding Event

Canisius College will hold a campus-wide shredding event for all college related materials. The Facilities Management Department will secure a central shredding location. Please note that personal material will not be accepted for shredding. Work orders for pick-up can be placed between Monday, May 20 – Friday, May 30

All material to be shredded must be boxed. Boxes can be obtained by placing an online work order with facilities management located in the MyCanisius Portal under My Applications, Facilities Work Order.

Once your shredding is boxed, please place a new work order to have these boxes picked up and moved to the central shredding location.

Please be patient as the facilities management staff will complete work orders according to staff availability and time schedules. Please do not call facilities management to request boxes or pick up of boxes. You will be referred to the work order system to place your request.

Thank you for your cooperation.
