Men’s Soccer Kicks Off Bonfire Celebration

Join the festivities in the Quad after the game

Your Golden Griffin men’s soccer team kicks off the home portion of its schedule Thursday, August 31 with a 4:30 p.m. contest against Robert Morris. Following the game, the college will celebrate an annual tradition with the Bonfire slated to be lit at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the Quad.

The game will highlight the first ever appearance at a soccer contest by the Golden Griffin pep band. In addition, students can register to win a 40″ TV via the Blue Gold Win App and three students will be selected to participate at halftime in the Demske 100 – an adult tricycle race featuring three souped-up bikes.

Bonfire activities are open to everyone. On the menu are s’mores and Anderson’s Ice Cream, plus a t-shirt exchange for anyone bringing a purple item to the party. Several students will participate in the “burning of the purple” as torch-bearers, and plenty of music will add to the festivities. It all starts around 7 p.m.

Serious Games Meet-up September 8

Dr. Leah MacVie shows how she incorporates games into her classroom

On Friday, September 8 at 11:00 a.m., Serious Games Meetup Group convenes its first meetup of the Fall 2017 semester.  Leah MacVie, PhD, will show us games she has employed in her classroom, and the ways she has encouraged future teachers to think about gaming as part of pedagogy.  Games needn’t be complicated, tech-heavy, and big-budget activities – Professor MacVie and her students play and create “analog” paper and card games that enable learners to experience concepts as processes and activities.

Serious Games can serve a wide variety of purposes: educational, scientific simulation, healthcare and therapy, personnel training, emergency management, city planning, and politics.  The Serious Games Meetup Group explores learning theories and game design, and conducts workshops for faculty, staff, and students that explore digital and analog game use and creation.  And yes, we play some games, too!  All students, faculty, staff, and alumni are welcome at our meetups.

The group, facilitated by P.J. Moskal, PhD, associate professor of Digital Media Arts, and Mark Gallimore, PhD, instructional designer in the Center for Online Learning & Innovation (COLI), will meet on the first Friday of the month for one-hour sessions.
