Canisius in the News

President John Hurley outlines the future of Canisius College in an article in Business First. He also discusses his long tenure at the college and how proud he is to serve as president.

“There isn’t a place I go where people don’t pull me aside and tell me how Canisius made a difference in their lives, or their children’s lives, or the grandchildren’s lives,” says President Hurley.

In an article in The Boston Globe, Molly Burhans 14 talks about her GoodLands Project, which uses cutting-edge GIS software to map the global Catholic Church.

Memorial Mass for Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, SJ

Faculty, staff, alumni and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass for Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, SJ, on Saturday, August 12 at 9 a.m. in Christ the King Chapel. Vincent Cooke 1 001

Father Cooke, the former president of Canisius College and provincial of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus, passed away on June 22, 2017 in Murray-Weigel Hall on the Fordham University campus from pancreatic cancer. He was 81.

Rev. Michael F. Tunney, SJ, rector of the Fairfield University Jesuit Community and former director of Mission and Identity at Canisius College, will serve as the principal celebrant and homilist.

Father Cooke served as the 23rd president of Canisius College from July 1993 through July 2010.  During his tenure, he led a dramatic transformation of Canisius from a local commuter college into a regionally-prominent residential, comprehensive university through his strategic pursuit of high-quality academics, faculty, facilities and students.

After retiring from Canisius, he returned to New York City to become assistant to the provincial for higher education for the New York Province of the Society of Jesus. Later he served as assistant for strategic planning for the Maryland, New England and New York Provinces.

Canisius students enjoyed the rare opportunity to “chat” with the Bishop, ask questions and engage in conversation.  “Campus Chat with Bishop Richard J. Malone” is a half-hour program that allows college students the unique opportunity to sit down with Buffalo’s spiritual leader and chat without scripts, pretenses, or judgements…Just honesty.
