Welcome to the start of the 2017 fall semester! For many of our students, this is a special day that marks their first steps into academic life at Canisius. For our returning students and faculty these early days of the semester are a time of anticipation and fresh beginnings. For all members of the Canisius community, I hope you enjoyed a wonderful summer and are energized for all that the new semester has in store. It’s always invigorating to see the campus come alive again with activity and see the excitement in the faces of our students.
This summer has been an exceedingly busy time for us. I’ve updated you on a number of critical issues facing the college during the summer and I have more to share with you at my annual President’s Convocation on September 6 in the Montante Cultural Center at 4:00 p.m. This is a special gathering for our faculty and staff when I will report on a number of important matters and lay out the priorities for the year ahead. All faculty and staff plus a guest are welcome to attend and join me for a cocktail reception to follow. If you have not already done so, please RSVP here. For those unable to attend, a video of the address will be recorded and posted to the website.
Beyond the Convocation address, I will continue to provide updates on the state of the college at several Town Hall events during the fall semester on:
I hope you’ll add these dates to your calendar and join me for these discussions.
I also want to remind you that Canisius is among the many Catholic universities across the country that usher in the new academic year through a special Mass of the Holy Spirit. Ours will be held on Wednesday, September 13 at 9:30 a.m. in the Montante Cultural Center followed by brunch in the Student Center. I hope everyone takes advantage of the special gap in the class schedule this day and makes every effort to attend. This Mass and the Convocation are annual traditions that embody the Catholic, Jesuit mission and values of Canisius and allow us to celebrate our solidarity as a campus community. We respect and honor the diversity of all faith traditions represented on our campus and welcome all to join the liturgy.
I look forward to seeing you in the halls and around campus. Whether you are new to the Canisius family or a returning student, faculty or staff member, I wish you all the very best for a rich and rewarding semester.

The Dome will publish three times per week – Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays – beginning today, Monday, August 28. The employee newsletter includes new features and many back by popular demand.
Favorite features including “Campus Candids,” “Faculty Spotlights” and “Canisius in the News” continues, and the “Get to Know” profiles will return on Wednesdays.
We listened to what you had to say! The results of the Employee Engagement Survey showed that you want to hear about their colleagues’ promotions, title changes and new hires at the college. The Office of Human Resources will keep the campus community informed in a “Colleagues on the Move” feature. HR will also manage an “Employee of Distinction” recognition program. Watch The Dome for more details and information about how you can nominate someone for this honor. In addition, look for additional announcements about faculty/staff events this fall.
The Dome is still the best place to announce news of upcoming events. Moving forward, readers can click on the “EVENTS” headline on the email and find a listing of all upcoming events in one place.
Please remember that submissions are due by 2 p.m. the day before publishing. We hope that you enjoy the new additions to The Dome.
Stay tuned…We have more planned including contests, prizes and college trivia.
We want to hear from you! Please send your thoughts, comments and ideas to collegecommunications@canisius.edu so we can work together and continue to improve The Dome.
