Schlyer to Discuss Impact of U.S.- Mexico Border Wall

Krista Schlyer, an internationally-known wildlife photographer based in Washington, D.C., will discuss “Continental Divide: Wildlife, People and the Border Wall” on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center.  Schlyer’s talk, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the anthrozoology graduate program at Canisius.

In a slideshow presentation, Schlyer will discuss her eight-year documentary project about the U.S.- Mexico borderlands, a region stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico, which hosts a number of rare ecosystems. In documenting the changes to the ecosystem and human communities along the border while the wall was being built, Schlyer realized that the impacts of immigration policy on wildlife, on landowners and on border towns were not fully understood by either policy makers or the general public.  In her talk, Schlyer will discuss the history of the borderlands and border policy and, the consequences of border militarization and the current immigration debate as it pertains to borderlands ecosystems, wildlife and people who call this region home.

All Invited to the Mass of the Holy Spirit

All are cordially invited to the annual Mass of the Holy Spirit, a campus-wide celebration to be held at 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 13, 2017.  The Most Reverend Richard J. Malone, bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, will preside over Mass in the Montante Cultural Center. The Mass itself is a centuries-old tradition in which we joyfully ask the Holy Spirit to be with us throughout the academic year, keeping us faithful and true to the ideals formed by Jesuit education. The Mass is open to people of all denominations and faith backgrounds, as well as those of no faith background.  This year, a special blessing of all campus leadership will take place. This will include the faculty, student leadership, and administrative leadership.

I personally invite you to participate in this event.  It is helpful for our students to know that faculty and staff join them in celebrating the start of the new academic year.  It is also important for the campus community to come together and celebrate as part of our enduring campus culture. As you may recall, the new academic calendar specifies that classes that meet MWF will not be scheduled to meet on September 13. This was revised in order to encourage greater participation by all.

Any faculty members (full-time or part-time) in need of regalia should contact the Canisius Bookstore, at Ext. 2336 or 0527mgr@follett.com to arrange to rent regalia. You can also stop by the bookstore to submit your order, or complete and return the form here via email. All orders must be confirmed by end of day Friday, September 1.

Faculty should line up at 9:15 a.m. in the Faculty Lounge in Old Main.  The procession and opening remarks begin at 9:30 a.m  outside Christ the King Chapel.

Faculty, please wear your full academic regalia. Time spent in the heat outside will be minimal.

For more information, contact Lisa Fischer, support manager for Academic Affairs, at Ext. 2120.
