Canisius Works With ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Nearly 45 Canisius College students served as volunteers on the set of ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on Saturday, November 7, at the start of filming for the Buffalo episode. The reality television series, which airs Sundays at 8:00 p.m., will spend the next week deconstructing the severely distressed home of the Powell Family on Massachusetts Avenue in the city of Buffalo, and building a new energy-efficient residence. In preparation for the weekend deconstruction, Canisius students helped move the Powell family belongings out of their home.

David Homes is the lead builder on the project, and is owned and operated by Canisius College alumnus David M. Stapleton, from the Class of 1987.

“Canisius students coming together to serve on a local project with a national audience was a truly unique experience, especially with a Canisius alumnus in charge of the project,” says Mark Tortelli ’10, president of the Undergraduate Student Association. “We emptied every room of the house and cleared out the garage so that the demolition and disassembling teams could go to work right away. It’s one of those things that we will be able to look back upon and know that we played a part in giving an extremely deserving family a new start.”
